D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: T O plan, schedule, and supervise work of creamery employees; determine supply needs; plan and schedule operations in accordance with supply and demand for processed dairy products, in accordance with research activities of faculty and students, and in accordance with needs of dairy technology courses; maintain high standards of plant sanitation; care for and maintain all creamery equipment, including refrigeration plant; operate and instruct others in the operation of mechanical refrigeration equipment; perform and instruct others in the performance of all operations connected with butter making, ice cream production, and cheese manufacture; operate equipment used in making standard tests of dairy products; confer with dairy plant managers and operators, as well as other visitors, on operating and equipment problems. QUALIFICATIONS: University graduation, with major in dairy technology, preferable; educational qualifications may be offset by experience in dairy manufacturing substituted year for year up to a maximum of four years; five years' experience in the manufacture of dairy products; knowledge of operation of mechanical refrigeration equipment, of processes involved in the production of butter, ice cream, and cheese, and of equipment used in standard tests on dairy products, essential; certification by University Health officer as food handler; male; minimum age twenty-six. Tool and Instrument Mechanic DEFINITION: Under supervision of a foreman, to perform work requiring machinist skill developed to a high degree. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: T O perform skilled work as a machinist; install, repair, construct, develop, and calibrate a variety of machine shop tools, dies, jigs, gauges, instruments, gears, fixtures, and perform difficult machine operations on replacement parts; make parts and assemble new equipment as sketched out by others, operate precision instruments; exercise judgment to diagnose trouble, determine necessary repair, tear down and reassemble machines; perform fine instrument work such as required for microscopes, telescopes, and other precision instruments. QUALIFICATIONS: Grade school education; vocational training desirable; sufficient experience to qualify as a journeyman machinist with minimum of five years of actual work at the trade; elementary knowledge of materials and heat treatment of metals; proficiency in the use of tools and equipment; ability to read and interpret complex drawings, sketches, and diagrams characteristic to machine shops; use shop mathematics, charts, tables and handbook formulas; must have skill to work to close tolerances and to use precision instruments; good physical condition; minimum age twenty-three. Musician (Navy Pier) DEFINITION: Under departmental supervision, to accompany classes engaged in rhythm activities and to provide music for student extracurricular functions. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: To accompany classes in modern dance, square dancing, and folk dancing; play for dance concerts and other special occasions; practice with instructors for class lessons; select a n d / o r suggest music for concerts and classes. QUALIFICATIONS: Rapid sight reader of classical music; keen sense of rhythmic timing; ability to accompany an instructor or a class in the required tempo; ability to deal with individuals and groups harmoniously; knowledge of, and training in the use of, classical music libraries. Placement Officer DEFINITION: Under administrative direction, but with the exercise of considerable independent judgment, to be responsible for an employment program for student or nonacademic positions. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: To interview applicants for employment; assist applicants in filling out application forms; answer questions and supply information regarding University employment policies and requirements; file applications; make reports supplying information on present employees or new applicants as requested; work with Civil Service section in assigning applicants from eligible registers; arrange interviews for applicant with employing official; write letters to references indicated on applications; call applicant on telephone requesting him to report for work or rejecting his application; determine eligibility with regard to education, quality of training and experience, citizenship and other factors if candidates from registers are not available; examine personal identification papers, such as birth certificates
