REPORT OF EMERGENCY PURCHASES OF COAL

(14) As a result of the coal strike, on October 25, 1949, the Board of Trustees authorized the President of the Board and the Comptroller to approve emergency purchases of coal at the best price obtainable by the Director of Purchases. The Provost and the Comptroller commented on this matter. President Williamson expressed the appreciation of the Board for the excellent work of the Provost and other officers in the emergency.

CONTRACT FOR POWER PLANT ADDITION (15) The Director of the Physical Plant and the Comptroller recommend award of a contract for $114,665 to Kuhne-Simmons Company, Inc., Champaign, the lowest bidder, for construction of the addition to the Abbott Power Plant. This contract will cover the superstructure and erection of structural steel (which has been purchased separately) for an additional turbine room. Funds are available in the State appropriation for 1949-1951 for "Additions to Power and Heating Plant and Remodeling of Existing Buildings" ("For Permanent Improvements at Urbana-Champaign"). I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute this contract subject to the release of funds by the Governor.
