1911] PROCEEDINGS OE THE BOARD OE TRUSTEES. PLANS FOR NEW ENGINEERING BUILDING. 437 18. The following letter from Dr. W. F. M. Goss, dean of the College of Engineering: URBANA, I I I . , July 6, 1911. President Edmund J. James, University of Illinois: DEAR SIR—In the development of the plans for the new engineering building, I am assuming that the $200,000.00 available may be spent approximately as follows: Land not to exceed $ 40,000 00 Main portion of building 100,000 00 Laboratory portion of building 30,000 00 •Equipment of laboratory 30,000 00 $200,000 00 It is proposed that the building shall be primarily a transportation building. The main portidn of the building will have three working floors. It will house all the activities of the Railway Engineering Department, and. for the time being it will accommodate other interests as follows: The whole of the upper floor will be given to general engineering drawing; it will provide offices and recitation and lecture rooms for the Department of Mining Engineering; and it will provide office and recitation and lecture rooms for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Detailed plans under this outline will in due time be submitted. Respectfully yours, W. F. M. Goss. I n the course of the discussion of plans for the new Engineering building which followed it was voted t h a t the sum of eight hundred dollars ($800.00) be appropriated for the purpose of reimbursing Mr. S. K. Hughes, agent^ for the money advanced by him in securing land to be occupied by the new Engineering building ($400.00), and for commissions upon the purchase of the property thus far secured ($400.00); this sum to be charged to the legislative appropriation for an engineering building and site. I t was voted, also, to authorize an expenditure not to exceed fifteen hundred dollars ($1,500.00), to be made from the $200,000.00 appropriation for the engineering building and site, for such expert assistance as may be necessary in designing the equipment for the said building, such expenditure to be subject to the approval of the dean of the College of Engineering. AUTHORITY TO PURCHASE LAND. 19. A recommendation that the comptroller of the University be relieved of the responsibility placed upon him by the Board of Trustees (see- page 158) with reference to the further purchase of land as a site for the new Engineering building, by transferring the authority given him in this matter to the dean of the College of Engineering; and that the said dean be authorized to proceed in all matters affecting such purchases, and in all matters affecting the. sale of improvements on the land that may be acquired by such purchases, subject to the approval of the Executive Committee of the board. This recommendation was approved.
