UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS.

PAINTING AND REPAIRS. 20. The following letter from Prof. J. M. "White, supervising architect:

URBANA, I I I . , July 8, 1911.

President Edmund J. James, University of Illinois: DEAR PRESIDENT JAMES—There are two State appropriations available for the maintenance and improvement of our buildings, including, the heating, lighting, plumbing, etc. The first of these appropriates $15,000.00 per annum for enlarging the general heating and lighting plant, and the other $25,000.00 per annum for painting and repairs on buildings and improvements to grounds. Against the first item, for which I asked that an appropriation of $37,500.00 per annum be made, it was the intention to charge all improvements" in lighting and ventilating throughout the buildings, together with changes in heating by the addition of .temperature control, and also to provide for vacuum cleaning equipment and adequate campus lighting. In the hope that this ^appropriation may yet be enlarged to take care of these items, I am not asking that any appropriations be made from the second sum for these items. In view of the fact also that special appropriations have this year been made for the reconstruction of the Men's Gymnasium, the Law building, the Agronomy Greenhouses, and the Horticultural building, I am not recommending that any of the special appropriations be assigned at this time for repairs upon the buildings mentioned; and in the case of the Woman's building, which we are now remodeling, I have not recommended any repairs which will be lost when the addition is made to the building. I recommend that appropriations be made from the State appropriation of $50,000.00 for painting and repairs on buildings and improvements to grounds as follows:
