retirement deductions, and overtime compensation and incorporate into payrolls; verify complete payrolls; disburse pay checks; maintain complete files pertaining to payrolls; furnish University Retirement System with payroll information and reports; answer questions for University staff relating to pay; supervise work of Payroll Clerks I and I I . QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation, with University training desirable; at least three years' experience in clerical work, two years of which must have been in University payroll work; typing ability; accuracy and aptitude in handling figures; tact and ability to meet people; thoroughness; thorough knowledge of University business and financial procedures; supervisory ability; minimum age twenty-one. Payroll Clerk II DEFINITION: Under supervision, to perform responsible work in connection with the preparation of University payrolls and in the maintenance of payroll records. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: Assist in the preparation and maintenance of payroll records; verify payrolls for accuracy; calculate withholding tax, retirement deductions, and overtime compensation; assist in making payments in advance for payroll date; maintain files for payroll authorizations, earnings records, time cards, and other related data. QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation; typing ability; accuracy and aptitude in handling figures; thoroughness; tact; ability to meet people; at least two years experience in clerical work, one of which must have been in payroll work; minimum age eighteen. Clerk-Stenographer III DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to be responsible for the performance of difficult stenographic and complex clerical work, involving the exercise of independent judgment a n d / o r the supervision of clerical or stenographic staff of lower rank. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: T O take and transcribe difficult dictation, including technical manuscripts, tabulations, statistical data and subject matter requiring exceptional skill and ability; transcribe similar materials from dictating machine; supervise the work of clerical staff of lower rank in the office; be responsible for files, payrolls, and general office routine; compile data for reports; arrange appointments and conferences; give out information as directed; compose routine correspondence; receive callers; operate office a n d / o r duplicating machines as required; prepare materials for mailing; handle cash and other valuables; keep expenditure and income accounts; perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation; business training preferred; at least one year of responsible clerical, typing, and stenographic experience, preferably in a university or college; typing speed forty-five net words per minute; shorthand speed eighty net words per minute; minimum age twenty. Clerk-Stenographer II DEFINITION: Under direct supervision, but with some independence, to perform clerical, typing, and stenographic duties. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: T O take and transcribe dictation; do typing of notes, manuscripts, records, requisitions, vouchers, reports and letters; transcribe from dictating machines; do typing of materials and do cutting of stencils which sometimes involve technical text, tabulations, or foreign languages; compile data and minor statistics; sort, classify, index, insert, and withdraw file letters, records, requisitions, invoices, and subject matter materials; operate office and/or duplicating machines as required; arrange appointments; receive callers; give out information as directed; perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation with special training in typing, shorthand, and clerical work or post-high school business training; one year of stenographic experience preferable; typing speed forty-five net words per minute; shorthand speed eighty net words per minute; minimum age eighteen.
