Senior Proofreader DEFINITION: Under supervision of Superintendent of Print Shop, to be responsible for and to perform proofreading duties, including supervision of work of Junior Proofreaders and Copyholders. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: T O supervise the work of Junior Proofreaders and Copyholders; distribute manuscripts to proofreaders; proofread books, pamphlets, and other manuscripts; revise and check page and press proofs; review printer's proof for appearance, style, spacing, and pagination; perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation; college training desirable; at least six years of full-time experience in proofreading; college training accepted year for year up to a maximum of four years in lieu of required experience; thorough knowledge of editorial symbols; accuracy; thorough knowledge of English usage, grammar, and spelling; thoroughness; supervisory ability; minimum age twenty-five. Junior Proofreader DEFINITION: Under direction of Senior Proofreader, to perform proofreading work. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: T O review manuscripts and printed matter for typographical errors; revise and check proofs; mark corrections on page and press proofs; perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation; college training desirable; four years of full-time experience in proofreading work; college training accepted year for year up to three years in lieu of experience required; knowledge of editorial symbols; thorough knowledge of English usage, grammar, and spelling; accuracy; thoroughness; minimum age twenty-one. Secretary DEFINITION: Under administrative supervision, to assist in administrative, as well as secretarial responsibilities, in connection with the operation of an administrative or academic unit, exercising original judgment, discrimination, and independent thought. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: T O be responsible for the operation of an office and supervision of office staff; attend departmental staff meetings; develop and initiate office forms and procedures; suggest ways of improving departmental procedures; assist superior in making decisions on personnel problems; perform minor research or statistical work where required; collect data and prepare final reports, as well as rough drafts; take and transcribe difficult and complex dictation; prepare correspondence and sign superior's name to same, as well as on forms, requisitions, vouchers and similar papers; do considerable independent work in budget preparation and in keeping budget accounts; give out authoritative information; relieve immediate superior in handling many personal contacts; counsel and assist students; schedule and arrange appointments and conferences for superior; be responsible for the safety, repair, maintenance, and inventory of departmental equipment, and for the safety and security of departmental records, cash, and valuable documents; perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: University or college graduation required unless offset by experience of special value and significance; three years of administrative office and secretarial experience, preferably in a university or college; ability to take dictation at the rate of eighty words per minute, to transcribe complex and semi-technical material at a working rate of speed, and to type at the rate of fifty words per minute; minimum age twenty-three. Assistant Superintendent of Print Shop DEFINITION: Under the Superintendent, to assist in the maintenance, operation, and supervision of the Print Shop.
