CHANGES IN MASTER'S DEGREES IN ART (7) The Faculty of the College of Fine and Applied Arts and the University Senate recommend the following changes in the titles, admission requirements, and programs leading to the several master's degrees offered in the Department of Art. For students whose major field is art education or art history, the name of the degree to be conferred shall be Master of Arts, rather than Master of Fine Arts, as heretofore. It is further proposed that candidates for admission to the master's degree program in art education must have a teaching certificate in their field, or be eligible for one. For students whose major field is design or painting and graphics, the name of the degree shall continue to be Master of Fine Arts, the requirement of eight units of study shall be increased to twelve and the areas of study shall be extended as indicated in the following revised requirements. Design Major To qualify for the degree, with a major in design, each student is required to complete successfully all of the following courses to the minimum of twelve units. A thesis is required. Art 491, Special Problems, I to 3 units A r t 493, Seminar, I unit A r t 477, Design Laboratory, 4 to 6 units Art History (two courses elected from the group Art 311 through Art 318), V/i units Art Electives ( A r t 333, 34*, 351. 355, 371, 372, 494, and Art H i s t o r y ) , 2 to 3 units Painting and Graphics Major To qualify for the degree, with a major in painting and graphics, each student is required to complete successfully all of the following courses to the minimum of twelve units. A thesis is required. Art 341, Painting Materials and Techniques, yi unit (substitution of credit in other courses may be made for this subject by permission of Departmental Graduate Committee) Art 491, Special Problems, I to 3 units Art 493, Seminar, I unit Art 495, Painting Laboratory, 2 to 6 units Art 497, Graphics Workshop, J4 to 6 units Art History (two courses elected from the group Art 311 through Art 318), V/i units Art Electives ( A r t 351, 371, 372, 494 and Art H i s t o r y ) , 1 to 2 units I concur.

On motion of Mr. Nickell, these changes were approved.

DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN RECREATION (8) The Faculty of the School of Physical Education and the University Senate recommend establishment of a graduate program leading to the degree of Master of Science in Recreation to be set up as follows: Requirements for Admission ( a ) A minimum grade-point average of 3.5 for all courses taken during the last two years in earning the bachelor's degree; ( b ) thirty semester hours of approved undergraduate credit in recreation or closely allied courses; (c) fifteen semester hours in the social and psychological sciences; (d) eight semester hours of undergraduate credit in the natural sciences; and (e) a course in tests and measurements or statistics. Applicants lacking a portion of the prerequisites under item (b) may substitute certified professional field experience, not to exceed eight semester hours. Students will not be admitted on limited status. Requirements for Graduation ( a ) Four units of credit in approved courses in recreation, education, political science, psychology, social work, and sociology; (b) two units of approved electives to be chosen in art, botany, geology, health education, landscape architecture, literature, music, physical education, speech, and zoology; (c) registration in and satisfactory completion of Recreation 490 (Seminar) for one semester, without credit; ( d ) presentation of an acceptable thesis in recreation (two units).
