I have authorized a leave of absence with pay for Dean Youmans so that he may render this service to the United States Army. O n m o t i o n of M r . N i c k e l l , t h i s r e p o r t w a s r e c e i v e d for r e c o r d . APPOINTMENT OF JOSEPH GERMANO TO ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF INSTITUTE OF LABOR AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS (5) I recommend the appointment of Mr. Joseph Germano, East Chicago, Indiana, President of the Illinois State Industrial Union Council and Director of District 31 of the United Steelworkers of America, CIO, as a member of the advisory committee of the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations. Mr. Germano will replace Mr. James Matson who has resigned.

On motion of Mr. McLaughlin, this appointment was made as recommended.

CHANGE IN STATUS OF DIRECTOR OF NURSES IN THE RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL HOSPITALS (6) The Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges recommends that the position of Director of Nursing Service in the Research and Educational Hospitals, which is now a civil service classification, be removed from civil service and be designated as an academic-administrative position. I concur.

Dr. Ivy commented on this matter. On motion of Mr. Williamson, these recommendations were approved.

APPOINTMENTS TO T H E 19 4 8 SUMMER SESSION (7) The Dean of the Summer Session has submitted a budget for the 1048 Summer Session (see Appendix, page 1124). The budget provides for an eight-week session at Urbana-Champaign, 1 at the Chicago and Galesburg Undergraduate Divisions, and at the College of Pharmacy. Salaries of present members of the faculty who are being recommended for appointments to the Summer Session staff are computed on the basis of two-ninths of the salary of the academic year for two months of summer service. This is in accordance with the terms of employment of the academic, administrative, research, and extension staffs authorized by the Board of Trustees on January 8, 1948 (Minutes, page 952). The budget proposed totals $617,861 for Urbana-Champaign, $92,039 for the Chicago Undergraduate Division, $17,503 for the Galesburg Undergraduate Division, and $2,139 for the College of Pharmacy. I recommend that: 1. The appointments to the Summer Session staff be approved as submitted. 2. All appointments or contracts for service during the Summer Session include a provision permitting reduction in time and salary or cancellation of the contract in the event that enrollment in certain courses or sections thereof does not warrant continuation of the appointment on the basis originally recommended. 3. T h e President of the University be authorized to make such changes and adjustments, including additional appointments and acceptance of resignations, as are necessary in accordance with the needs of the University.

On motion of Mr. Nickell, these recommendations were approved, and authority was given as requested.
