Death during tenth or any succeeding year of service, 50% of cash portion of compensation. Except and provided, however, that no death benefit shall be in excess of $3,000. No death benefit shall be paid in the following cases: ( a ) If the employee has ceased active service for the University, except in case he has retired on a retiring allowance from the University, or is on leave of absence. ( b ) If death occurs in circumstances making the same compensable under the State Workmen's Compensation Act. Cash compensation paid for summer session teaching or for any other extra service not covered by the regular annual salary will not be included in the computation of death benefits. C. A part thereof in the value of disability benefits. Any employee who has been in the service of the University for not less than five years who shall become permanently disabled or otherwise become physically unfit while in the employment of and the active service of the University may be retired with the approval of the Board of Trustees, and on retirement there shall be paid to him or her for a period of years equal to his years of service an amount equal to 25 per cent of the average cash portion of compensation which has been paid to him during the last five years prior to such retirement together with an additional one-half of one per cent of such average amount for each year of his service at the University of Illinois. For any employee who has been in the service of the University for a period of fifteen or more years the allowance shall be paid during the remainder of life. If the allowance as above calculated is less than $25 per month, the amount granted shall be $25 per month. No benefits payable under this paragraph shall exceed the amounts provided in Section 5.3 of "An Act to provide for the creation, maintenance, and administration of a Retirement System for the benefit of the staff members and employees of the University of Illinois and of certain other state educational and scientific agencies," approved July 21, 1941. T h e decision of the Board of Trustees in all such cases shall be final. 2. All rights and claims of any employee in or to death and disability benefits are forfeited, and shall cease, with the termination of service of such employee for the University, whether such termination is voluntary or otherwise. 3. The term "employee" as herein used shall include all members of the educational, administrative, secretarial, clerical, mechanical, and labor staffs who are on permanent and continuous employment. Members of the faculty employed in successive academic years shall be held to be in continuous employment even though their cash compensation is paid in or for less than 12 months of anyacademic year. 4. The Board of Trustees reserves the right to alter, modify, or annul all or any part of the provisions for compensation of employees as provided herein, at the end of any academic year, without liability, and all claims and rights of employees hereunder shall be subject to such modifications, alterations, or termination; nevertheless, all subject to the provisions and limitations of the State statute referred to in Section II of this resolution.

On motion of Mr. Karraker, this resolution was adopted, subject to review and confirmation by a special committee composed of the three members of this Board who are members of the Retirement Board. 1

EMPLOYEES OF UNIVERSITY RETIREMENT SYSTEM (12) Now that the bill establishing the University Retirement System for the State institutions of higher education and the State scientific surveys has become a law, it is necessary to set up an administrative organization and to provide office quarters. This will be the responsibility of the Board of Trustees of the University Retirement System.
