DANIEL CURLEY, Professor of English, for the academic year, to continue his work in the field of creative writing. JAMES DOUGLAS, George A. Miller Professor in the Department of Political Science and Visiting Associate, for the academic year, to analyze the dynamics of the two-party system in Britain and to relate the analysis to the mainstream of current political theory. JOHN L. HELLER, Professor of the Classics, for the second semester, to complete an index and bibliography interpreting the zoological abbreviations in the tenth and twelfth editions of Linnaeus' Systema naturae. LLOYD G. HUMPHREYS, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychology and Professor of Educational Psychology, for one semester, to continue his research in the area of factor analysis and to complete the first of several volumes on the nature of intelligence. ROBERT W. JOHANNSEN, Professor of History, for the first semester, to complete his biography of Stephen A. Douglas. FRANCOIS JOST, Professor of French and Chairman of Program on Comparative Literature, for the academic year, to continue his study of the theory and technique of the novel in its international context. RUDOLPH A. MARCUS, Professor of Physical Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, for the academic year, to pursue research in the field of theoretical chemical kinetics. RAJ MITTRA, Professor of Electrical Engineering, for the academic year, to continue research in the field of electromagnetic wave propagation and related areas. STEPHEN J. Y. TANG, Professor of Architectural Engineering in the Department of Architecture, for the academic year, to further his study of the problems of integrating the structural, mechanical, electrical, and environmental requirements in contemporary building complexes.

On motion of Mr. Hahn, these appointments were approved.

UNDERGRADUATE INSTRUCTIONAL AWARDS FOR THE SUMMER OF 1 9 6 8 (5) To encourage faculty interest in the systematic improvement in the quality of undergraduate instruction, the program of Undergraduate Instructional Awards is being proposed for continuation during the summer of 1968. The awards provide a full-time salary for two months (two-ninths of the academic year salary) plus required incidental expenses. Chicago Circle The Dean of Faculties, through the deans and directors, invited faculty members to submit applications with complete descriptions of the work proposed. After approval by heads of departments and review by the deans of the colleges and their committees, sixteen applications were submitted with priorities indicated. A special committee evaluated the proposals and recommended for support those believed to hold most promise of benefit to undergraduate instruction. In the light of the review of the proposals, the Dean of Faculties recommends, with the Chancellor's concurrence, that full-time appointments for two months during the summer of 1968, at current salary rates, be authorized for the following faculty members (total of eight involving six proposals): Salary Expenses Larry L.
