4. NELSON R. NUNNALLY, Assistant Professor of Geography, beginning September 1, 1968 (1), at an annual salary of $13,000. 5. WILLIAM J. REILLY, Visiting Professor in the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations, on one-fourth time, for the second semester 1967-68 (E25), at a salary of $3,800. 6. ROBERT A. VAN KLUYVE, Visiting Assistant Professor of English, for the second semester 1967-68 ( E ) , at a salary of $6,700. O n m o t i o n of M r . DEANSHIP OF T H E COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, CHICAGO CIRCLE (3) I recommend the appointment of Dr. David Canning Epperson, presently Associate Professor of Higher Education and Associate Provost of the University of Illinois, as Professor of Education on indefinite tenure and Dean of the College of Education at Chicago Circle beginning April 1, 1968, at an annual salary of $25,000 on a twelve months' service basis. The appointment as Dean will be from April 1, 1968, through August 31, 1969, which is consistent with the statutory provision of biennial tenure of deans, such appointments usually coinciding 'with the fiscal biennium. T h e recommendation is based upon a report from a special committee 1 and after consultation with the Dean of Faculties and Executive Committee of the College of Education.

On motion of Mr. Jones, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE CENTER FOR ADVANCED STUDY (4) Upon recommendation of the Policy Committee of the Center for Advanced Study, and with the concurrence of the Dean of the Graduate College and the Executive Vice-President and Provost, I submit the following nominations for appointments of Associates in the Center for Advanced Study during the academic year 1968-69 and for the program of research or study as indicated in each case. Chicago Circle NORMAN BLACKBURN, Professor of Mathematics, for two quarters, to carry on research related to the study of nilpotent groups and to participate in the Conference on Group Theory (University of Chicago, 1968-69). PAUL FONG, Associate Professor of Mathematics, for two quarters, for research on finite groups, in particular, simple groups; and to participate in the Conference on Group Theory (University of Chicago, 1968-69). NOBURO ITO, Professor of Mathematics, for two quarters, to investigate classes of doubly transitive permutation groups, and to participate in the Conference on Group Theory (University of Chicago, 1968-69). R U T H B. MARCUS, Professor and Head of the Department of Philosophy, for one quarter, to continue her philosophical inquiry into the nature of essentialism. JAN ROCEK, Professor of Chemistry, for two quarters, to pursue his studies of the mechanisms of the oxidation of organic compounds. Urbana-Champaign LLOYD E. BERRY, Professor of English, for the second semester, to continue his research on an edition of the complete works of Sir Thomas Elyot. EDWARD H . BETTS, Professor of Art, for one semester, to continue creative work in the field of painting. DAVID J. BORDUA, Professor of Sociology, for the academic year, to continue his research on several interrelated projects concerning police organization and operations. DONALD L. BURKHOLDER, Professor of Mathematics, for the academic year, to pursue his studies in martingale and ergodic theories and related areas of probability theory and analysis. JOHN CAGE, Visiting Professor in the School of Music and Associate in the Center for Advanced Study 1967-68, for the academic year, to produce a musical composition utilizing the facilities of the electronic music studio.
