APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR JAMES G. VAN D E R P O O L AS H E A D OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ART

(4) A recommendation t h a t Associate Professor James G. Van Derpool of the Department of Architecture be appointed Professor of the History of Art and Architecture and Head of the Department of Art in the College of Fine and Applied Arts, on indefinite tenure effective September 1, 1939, a t a n annual salary of $5,000. This appointment will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Professor E. J. Lake in 1938. Since then the Dean of the College has been administering the affairs of the Department. Professor Van Derpool will devote approximately half time to the Department of Architecture and half to the Department of Art.

On motion of Mr. Cleary, this appointment was made as recommended.

APPOINTMENT OF DR. H E N N I N G LARSEN (5) A recommendation that Dr. Henning Larsen of the State University of Iowa be appointed Professor of English for one year, effective September 1, 1939, a t an annual salary of $6,000.

On motion of Mrs. Plumb, this appointment was made as recommended.

RESIGNATION OF ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR A. JAMES CASNER (6) A report of the resignation of Associate Professor A. James Casner of the College of Law to accept a position on the Harvard Law School faculty. T h i s r e p o r t w a s r e c e i v e d for r e c o r d . APPOINTMENT OF RUSSELL N. SULLIVAN AS ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LAW (7) A recommendation from the Dean of the College of Law t h a t Mr. Russell Neil Sullivan, at present Associate Professor of Law at the University of Louisville, be appointed Assistant Professor of Law for two years beginning September 1, 1939, at an annual salary of $3,600. This appointment is to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Professor A. J. Casner.

On motion of Mr. Cleary, this appointment was made as recommended.

CHANGE OF STATUS FOR PROFESSOR CHARLES ZELENY (8) A recommendation from the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences t h a t Professor Charles Zeleny be appointed Research Professor of Zoology on one-half time at a salary of $3,000 a year, on indefinite tenure, effective September 1, 1939. Professor Zeleny has been in poor health for the past few years and was for a time on leave of absence. He is now carrying on such research work as he can but no teaching. The arrangement proposed is acceptable to him, and will relieve him of any teaching responsibility in the future.

On motion of Dr. Meyer, this appointment was made as recommended.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR F. P. SHEPARD

(9) On April 27, 1938 (Minutes, page 783), the Board authorized leaves of absence without pay for Associate Professor F . P. Shepard of the Department of Geology and Geography during the first semesters of 1939-1940 and 1940-1941 to enable him to carry on his oceanographic researches in the Pacific. He has requested, and the Head of the Department and the Dean of the College have approved, that this leave of absence be granted him during the second semester of 1939-1940 instead of the first. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Jensen, this request was granted.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR MRS. VELMA ROBERTS (10) Mrs. Velma Roberts, Secretary of the Military Bands, has been given sick leave of absence for two months with full pay (in addition to the vacation allowance and sick leave to which she is entitled under University Statutes and Civil Service
