of $8,762.59. These machines are non-competitive and can be obtained only from this company. 2. Carpet for the Lincoln Hall Theater aisles, from W. Lewis and Company, Champaign, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,086.26 installed. 3. Rebuilding of 30-inch reflector telescope, as per specifications submitted by the Head of the Department of Astronomy, by J. W. Fecker at a price of $1,960, f.o.b. Pittsburgh. This is a non-competitive service. Mr. Fecker specializes in work on telescopes and has done similar jobs for leading observatories. 4. One 16-inch motor driven shaper (metal working machine), for the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, from the Western Machine Tool W o r k s , Holland, Michigan, at a price of $1,745.80, f.o.b. Urbana. This is the second low bidder; the machine offered by the lowest bidder ( P r a t t and Whitney, $1,202.75) is not satisfactory for the use of the Department because its construction would make difficult the accurate type of work required in its laboratory. 5. One No. 2 Universal Milling Machine for metal working, for the Department of Physics, from Kearney and Trecker Corporation, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the lowest bidder, at a price of $3,765.80, f.o.b. Urbana. 6. Zeiss Metallographic Microscope Equipment, for the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, from Adolph I. Buehler of Chicago, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,779.25 delivered. 7. Radium for the Department of Physics, from the S. W. Shattuck Chemical Company, Denver, Colorado, the lowest bidder, at a price of $2,220.00. 8. T w o cars of mixed lumber (Red Oak, Birch, Redwood, Cypress, F i r ) , for the Physical Plant Department, from the lowest bidders on these items: Missouri Hardwood Lumber Company, Kansas City Red Oak and Birch $ 632 50 William C. Schreiber Lumber Company, Chicago Redwood, Cypress, and Fir I 560 00 Total $2 192 50 9. Garment, towel, and laundry service for the Chicago departments, from the Chicago Towel Company, as per prices quoted. Bids were invited from five companies and only two were received, being identical. T h e Chicago Towel Company has been supplying towel service satisfactorily on an order basis since 1930.

On motion of Mrs. Plumb, these purchases were authorized as recommended.

PURCHASES AUTHORIZED (33) A report of the following purchases authorized by the President of the University in accordance with the University Statutes: 1. 300 Ewe Lambs, from the Intermountain-Producers Order Buyers of Denver, Colorado, at a price of approximately $1,500. No price is quoted as the market price at the time of purchase will govern. 2. One belt sander and one jointer (woodworking machines), for Industrial Education, from the Oliver Machinery Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,102.50, f.o.b. Urbana. 3. One Mobile X-Ray Unit with fluoroscopic attachment for both Radiography and Fluoroscopy, for the Department of Roentgenology of the College of Medicine, from the Standard X-Ray Company, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,256.25.
