1. Services as professional consultant in ( a ) Securing a qualified man to carry out a program of research for the Chicago National League Baseball Club, ( b ) Supervising the establishment of research laboratories in Chicago and Los Angeles and ( c ) Giving advice and general supervision to the development of the research program. 2. Leave of absence from his University duties for a continuous period of two weeks beginning with the week of February 20, 1938; and absence from the University for shorter periods on such other occasions as may be necessary when such absence will in no way interfere with his University duties or impair his health and strength for the performance of University work. 3. This arrangement to continue for seven months from February 1, 1938. 4. Satisfactory provision for his teaching work during the periods of his absence to be made by Director Griffith and any special expenses necessary to prompt and effective performance of his University duties while away to be met by him either in money or its equivalent. I recommend that Director Griffith be authorized to perform this service, and to accept fees, under the conditions stated above, but provided further that the arrangement is definitely terminated not later than September I, 1938 (instead of October I, 1938, as he originally proposed), and that no similar arrangements will be proposed during the year 1938-1939. O n motion of M r . Wieland, this authority was granted as recommended. At this point, M r . A d a m s took his place with the Board.

CHANGE IN STATUS OF DIRECTOR C. S. HAVENS

(8) A recommendation that Director C. S. Havens of the Physical Plant Department be given a part-time position in one of the academic departments of the University with professorial rank, in addition to his work as Director, without increase in salary. His extensive experience in and knowledge of institutional management and physical plant operations are such that they should be made available to advanced students interested in acquiring knowledge and training along those lines. Conversely contacts with students, and association with his colleagues through departmental meetings and conferences concerning educational and research problems will be of benefit to him.

On motion of Dr. Meyer, this arrangement was authorized.

LEAVE O F ABSENCE FOR DEAN H. W . MUMFORD

(9) A recommendation that Dean H. W. Mumford of the College of Agriculture be given a year's leave of absence, with full pay, beginning either September 1, 1938, or September 1, 1939, whichever arrangement will best serve the interests of the University. Dean Mumford will be due to retire under the University Statutes on September 1, 1939. If he takes the leave during the year following retirement, I recommend that it be with full service pay. This recommendation is submitted in recognition of an outstanding and conspicuous service. Dean Mumford came to the University as Professor of Animal Husbandry in the Agricultural Experiment Station in 1901. In 1939 he will have completed 38 years of distinguished service as a teacher and scientist, including 17 years as the administrative officer in charge of three important divisions of the University—Dean of the College of Agriculture, Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station, and Director of the Agricultural Extension Service. In several agricultural colleges such administrative responsibilities are divided among three individuals. Such service, in length of time, in distinction in scientific work and teaching, and in administrative work of the highest order, has seldom been equaled, and rarely exceeded, in the history of the University. During this period of his service Dean Mumford has never taken a sabbatical leave of absence; he was
