A P P O I N T M E N T O F ASSISTANT P R O F E S S O R BAINS (3) A recommendation that Mr. Thomas M. Bains be appointed Assistant Professor of Mining in the College of Engineering with salary at the rate of #3,000 a year for the period from January 1, 1923, to September 1, 1924. O n motion of M r s . Busey, this appointment w a s m a d e . RESOLUTIONS IN HONOR OF PROFESSOR MOSIER (4.) A recommendation that the following resolutions be adopted: The Board of Trustees have learned with sorrow of the death on November 10 of Jeremiah George Mosier, for twenty years Professor of Soil Physics in the College of Agriculture, and Chief in Soil Physics in the Agricultural Experiment Station, and desire to record their sense of loss, and their appreciation of Professor Mosier's notable services to the University, the State, and the cause of agricultural science. A leading pioneer in the science of soil physics, a distinguished collaborator in the great soil survey of the State of Illinois, a prolific contributor to the literature of his science, the co-author of a valuable and widely used text on soil physics and management, and a memorable teacher, he lives s i l in the enduring value of the tl additions he made to human knowledge, and in the characters and minds of the thousands of students he helped to train for happy and useful lives. The Board of Trustees directs that this testimonial to his distinguished career be spread upon its records, and that a copy be sent to his widow. O n motion of M r . Hoit, these resolutions were adopted.

RESOLUTIONS IN HONOR OF JAMES ROBERT MANN

(5) A recommendation that the following resolution be adopted: The Board of Trustees pauses in its labors to join with hundreds of other groups and thousands of individuals in honoring the memory of a distinguished alumnus of the University, James Robert Mann, of the Class of 1876, for twentyfive years a member from the State of Illinois of the Congress of the United States, who died in Washington on November 30, 1922. There is no need to set down in this place a record of the public offices he rilled or the particular services he rendered to his country in the course of his long career: these are a part of the history of the Commonwealth and the Nation. Suffice i to pay tribute to the fearlessness of his leadership and the constructivet ness of his statesmanship. The University has long claimed him with pride as one of its most eminent sons. It i with grief not for him alone, but also for the s Commonwealth that we lament his untimely death. The Trustees direct that this testimonial be entered in the minutes and a copy sent to his widow. O n motion of M r s . Grigsby, these resolutions were adopted. RESOLUTIONS IN HONOR OF WILLIAM EDWARD QUINE (6) A recommendation that the following resolution be adopted: On December 7, 1922, there passed away in Chicago William Edward Quine, for thirty-three years Professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics, and for twenty-one years Dean of the College of Medicine of the University of Illinois, and its honorary alumnus. In addition to his distinguished service as a teacher of medicine and a director of medical education, Doctor Quine labored for more than half a century as a practising physician in the city of Chicago, eminent among his colleagues for his skill and success in alleviating human suffering and curing human disease, and likewise for his frequent and noteworthy contributions to the literature of medical science and medical education.
