I9I8] UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS 27 ADDITION TO T H E LIBRARY STACK (24) Bids for the construction of the addition to the Library stack room. President E. / . James DEAR S I R : In my letter of May 28th with reference to the cost of the addition to the library stack room, I gave you the cost of the building at $35,ooo and the cost of the book stacks at 20 cents a volume for 200,000 volumes. W e have received bids (which are not entirely comparable) as follows: Snead & Co. on solid end stacks $46,010.00 A r t Metal Co. on bracket stacks 36,876.25 Library bureau on bracket stacks 34,771.00 Paltridge on solid end stacks 30,217.50 Professor Windsor is investigating to see whether we can consider the low bid. There is no question that the Library Bureau stack would be satisfactory. Estimates of the completed plans of the building indicate that it may probably run $1,000 over our estimate. Have we been authorized to award contracts to the amount of $70,000 to cover this building and the stacks? Yours truly, J A M E S M. WHITE Supervising Architect On motion of Mr. Hoit, the Comptroller was authorized to sign contracts prepared and approved by the Supervising Architect to the amount of $70,000 or so .much thereof as may be necessary to cover the cost of the building addition to the stack, already approved by the Board (page 746), and the stacks themselves. ALUMNI SUBSCRIPTION FOR AMERICAN UNIVERSITY UNION IN EUROPE (25) A report of the Alumni subscriptions to the American University Union in Paris. July 11, 1918 President E. J. James DEAR M R . PRESIDENT: I have this day deposited with the Comptroller a check for $464.60 to the credit of the fund for the American University Union in Paris. This makes a total of $1,221.10. Mr. Henry asks whether, in view of the fact that more than $1,000.00 has already been raised, it would not be well for him to discontinue his camp paign. I have replied that I think it would be well to continue the campaign, at any rate to the extent of collecting what has been already asked for by him and that I would recommend to you that the University pay over only $1,000.00 for the first year, as requested by the Union, holding the balance for future calls. I so recommend. Very truly yours, D. KlNLEY
