REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS.

URBANA, I I I . , Feb. 25, 1910.

To the Board of Trustees, University of Illinois: At a meeting of; the Committee on Buildings and Grounds held at the University this day, Dr. Carman submitted a statement of the accounts of the Physics building, showing a balance of $18,416.09, subject to the jurisdiction of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, and recommended that $6,400.00 be reserved for completion of the structure and embellishment of the same under the direction of the supervising architect; and that $12,000.00 of the remainder be appropriated at this time for appliances, apparatus, fittings, furnishings and equipment; to be expended under the direction of the head of the Department of Physics, and with the approval of the dean of the .College of Engineering. The above appropriations are available over and above all requisitions, and items which have been ordered in accordance with previous appropriations. The Buildings and Grounds Committee concurs in this' recommendation, and further recommends that the previous appropriations on account of the State Physics Building appropriation, over"and above the amounts for which requisitions have already been drawn, shall be cancelled. The report of the comptroller under date of Feb. 2, 1910, shows expenditures on account of the State Natural History Building appropriation, authorized and paid to date, amounting to $149,081.71. The Buildings and Grounds Committee directs that all outstanding obligations for furniture, over and above the $10,000.00 appropriation for same, shall be charged against the proper departmental accounts, with the understanding that there is a sufficient balance in the State appropriation to take care of the building accounts. Appropriations for the Museum addition to date have amounted to $27,823.50. In addition thereto, liabilities have been incurred as follows: Building window frames so that curtains could be put up for darkening the room $ 41 00 Pointing the east wall of the building with red mortar 45 00 Partition in basement (Dr. Burrill's instructions of Oct. 26, 1909).. 37 00 Blackboard moldings / 8 25 Curtains for darkening room 104 00 Blackboards, chart racks, demonstration desk and its furnishings.. 485 38 Total $720 63 The Buildings and Grounds Committee recommends that an appropriation be made to cover the amount of the foregoing items. The supervising architect recommended the acceptance of the Natural History building and the Museum addition to same from the contractors, and that the comptroller and supervising architect be authorized to make final settlement, subject to the filing by the contractors of the necessary surety bonds to protect the University, as provided for in their contract. The Buildings and Grounds Committee direct the acceptance of the buildings, and the making of a final settlement as recoihmended by the supervising architect. The supervising architect recommended that the Physics building be accepted from the contractors and that they be paid from the balances due on all three contracts, an amount aggregating $20,000.00 at the present time; and that the comptroller and supervising architect be authorized to make the final settlement whenever the building shall have been completed in all its details; the necessary surety bonds filed in accordance with the terms of the contract, and all settlements shall have been effected with subcontractors.
