ABEAHAM LINCOLN HALL.

Mr. Abbott presented the following letter from the State Architect, Mr. Z i m m e r m a n :

CHICAGO, March 8, 1910.

Mr. W. L. Abbott, President, Board of Trustees, University of Illinois, Urbana, III.: DEAR SIR—Referring to the contractor's competition for the building of the new Abraham Lincoln hall at the University, beg to say that twenty-one •contracting firms applied for plans and specifications, and that eleven of these submitted bids for the work, varying in amounts from $306,000.00 to $275,536.00. Certain alternates asked for brought this lowest bid down to about $233,000.00, which is $33,000.00 more than the amount allowed out of the appropriation for building purposes. It appears that there is a possibility of still further cutting the cost of the building to somewhere near the amount appropriated for it by making further changes in the type of construction and character of the building. Unless you direct otherwise, I will ask those contractors who figured the work to submit revised •estimates on these further changes. It will take two or three days to prepare revised plans and specifications and the contractors should be allowed about eight days to figure the work. Respectfully,

W. CAREYS ZIMMERMAN.

After some discussion of this letter,, further consideration was deferred until afternoon, in order that Dr. Greene, Dean of the College of Literature and Arts, and Dr. Kinley, Dean of the Graduate school might "be heard with regard to the amount of money needed for the equipment •of the building.
