Voted, that the question of fire protection should be referred to the Committee on Buildings and Grounds with authority to make such emergency provisions as might be necessary to protect the buildings against the immediate danger of fire, and that they present a plan for the more efficient protection of the University. 11. A request from the Dean of the College of Agriculture that a scholarship be granted to Martha Matthews. Approved. I n this connection a scholarship was granted Sallie Abbott, and a scholarship previously granted George H . Cheny but not accepted because of illness was renewed. 12. A request from Professor S. W. Parr for an appropriation of $200 to enable him to complete a piece of investigation work.into the subject of Illinois coals. T h e appropriation was made. 13. A statement as to the subject of extending the privileges of the scholarships in domestic science, now, available in the College of Agriculture, to the College of Science, with a suggestion that the matter be postponed for further consideration. T h e suggestion was approved. 14. A request from Katharine L. Sharp, Director of the Library School for the appointment of a reviser of cataloging for three months, February to April, 1905, at $50 a month. Request was granted, and authority given to the President to appoint said cataloger. 15. Proposed resolution concerning the policy of the State University as to affiliation of other educational institutions. WHEREAS, Applications from various institutions of learning have been made to the Trustees of the State University to affiliate the institutions in question; and, WHEREAS, It seems desirable to have some general policy in regard to such affiliations; therefore, be it Resolved, That it is the sense of this Board that no institution be affiliated with the University unless 'entire control of such institution be turned over absolutely to the Trustees of the University; and further, that the title to all property owned by such institution be vested in the State, without conditions and without limitations. T h e resolution was adopted. Also a further resolution, as follows: That no such institution be accepted unless there is ample guarantee on the part of its trustees, faculties and other persons interested in the institution that the requisite funds will be placed at the disposal of the University to conduct the institution in a manner worthy of the University and the State of Illinois until such time as the Legislature of the State assumes the financial support of the same. Lost by the following v o t e : Yeas, Messrs. McLean, Hatch, Kerrick, and Mrs: A l e x a n d e r ; nays, Messrs. Bullard, Nightingale, and M r s . Abbott and M r s . E v a n s ; absent, Governor Yates and Messrs. Dickirson, Bavliss and McKinley. 16. That the President of the United States be invited, to visit the University of Illinois at some time to suit his convenience. Approved.
