A meeting of this committee was called and convened at t h e Doane House in Champaign, October 31, 1890. The members present were Messrs. McLean, Bennett, and the Regent. Those absent were Messrs. Cobb and Edwards. The Regent named for t h e chair of psychology, Professor Charles DeGrarmo, of Normal, Illinois. After consideration the nomination was approved, and Mr. DeGarmo was appointed professor of psychology, with a salary at the rate of $2,000 per annum, to take effect January 1, 1891. In like manner Professor Samuel W. Parr, of Jacksonville, Illinois, was recommended for a professorship in chemistry. This nomination was approved, and Mr. Parr was appointed accordingly, the division of labor between him and Professor Palmer, already in the service of the University in the department of chemistry, being left for subsequent arrangement. The appointment was ordered to take effect the first of January, 1891, the salary to be at the rate of $1,800 per annum. Whereupon the committee adjourned. A meeting of t h e same committee was convened a t t h e Grand Pacific Hotel in Chicago, November 28, 1890. Present, Messrs. McLean, Bennett, and Cobb, and the Regent. The Regent named t h e Rev. M. R. Paradis, of Urbana, to be professor of French. After consideration it was ordered t h a t the nomination be approved, and t h a t Mr. Paradis be appointed professor of French, with salary at t h e rate of $1,800 per annum, the appointment to take effect the first of January, 1891. The Executive Committee made the following report:

To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois held a meeting at the Doane House in Champaign, Illinois, October 31, 1890. Present, Messrs. McLean and Bennett. The Committee ordered t h a t the University be represented at t h e approaching meeting of the Association of American Agricultural Colleges and Experiment Stations by the Regent, and the Experiment Station by Professor BurrilL The Regent presented a communication as to the need of rebuilding the assaying furnaces in the basement of the Chemical Laboratory, showing also t h a t the flues for said furnaces, as now constructed, are wholly inadequate for their purposes. He explained a plan for reconstructing the furnaces and flues against the south wall of t h e assaying room, the flues to be carried up against said wall to and out from t h e roof. The plan was approved, and the matter was referred to the Regent and t h e Committee on Buildings and Grounds, with power to make the improvement a t an expense not to exceed two hundred and fifty dollars, l o b e paid from state appropriation for metallurgical laboratory.
