1959] UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS 969 APPROPRIATION AND CONTRACTS FOR REMODELING OF BOILER PLANT IN HORTICULTURE FIELD LABORATORY (15) The Director of the Physical Plant and the Vice-President and Comptroller recommend awards of contracts as follows for remodeling of the boiler plant in the Horticulture Field Laboratory, the award in each case being to the lowest bidder: Heating — Ideal Heating Company, Chicago $39 333 00 Electrical work — Brunkow Electric Company, Champaign 1 100 00 The total cost of this remodeling project, including the above contracts, work to be done by the Physical Plant Department, and other expenditures, will be $49,000, which is in line with the engineering estimates. I recommend that an appropriation of $49,000 be made from the General Reserve Fund for this necessary remodeling and that the contracts be awarded. There is submitted herewith a supporting report from the Physical Plant Department including the schedule of all bids received and a copy is being filed with the Secretary for record. On motion of Mr. Hughes, these contracts were awarded by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Clement, Mr. Harewood, Mr. Herrick, Mr. Hughes, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Pogue, Mr. Swain, Mrs. Watkins, Mr. Wilkins, Mr. Williamson; no, none; absent, Mr. Stratton. AWARD OF CONTRACTS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF PEABODY DRIVE RESIDENCE HALLS (16) Bids have been received for the construction of the Peabody Drive Residence Halls, to consist of three housing units and a dining hall, for 1,494 undergraduate students in the southeast area of the former Parade Grounds. A report from the Director of the Physical Plant, including schedules of bids received and explanation of the alternates, is submitted herewith, and a copy is being filed with the Secretary of the Board for record. Revenue bonds for the construction of this project were scheduled to be received on September 15, but because of the veto of the federal housing legislation, the bond sale must be postponed until September 29. The Board has previously authorized the Executive Committee to approve a loan agreement with the federal government and to sell the bonds for this project. On recommendation of the Director of the Physical Plant, the Vice-President and Comptroller, and the President of the University, the Executive Committee approved awards of contracts to the following bidders, subject to the sale of bonds to finance the construction. The contract awards are to the lowest bidders on "Base Bid B " which is for the construction of the complete project, i.e., the three housing units and a dining hall building, and include certain specified alternates (alternates A, B, C, D, E, and H which are explained in the supporting statement from the Physical Plant Department referred to above) and provide that the mechanical contracts shall be assigned to the general contractor for direction and supervision. Bishop Company, Champaign 153 290 Elevator — Trimon Elevator Company, Inc., Chicago 48 480 Total $5 246 231 In order that construction of two of the three housing buildings be completed uy September, i960, the Executive Committee also approved issuance of letters of intent to the above contractors, authorizing them to proceed with construction work at a cost not to exceed $105,000, the funds to be advanced from accumulated reserves of the Housing Division. With the postponement of the bond sale, the contractors should be authorized to proceed with construction up to a cost of •?20o,ooo prior to October 31. Funds are available in Housing Division Reserves tor these expenditures.
