206 BOARD OF TRUSTEES [May 10, In recommending for approval Professor Baker's request for his retirement, I wish to add my word of admiration concerning the great value of his service to the University and the fine influence he has had outside of his class room in the life of large groups of students. The rest of us are honored in having served with him. Since Professor Baker has served the University more than twenty-five years and is past sixty-five years of age, I recommend that he be retired as Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering. On motion of Mrs. Evans these recommendations were approved, and the President of the University was requested to write to Professor Baker an expression of the Board's appreciation of his long and valuable service. RESIGNATION OF PROFESSOR E D W A R D W I G H T W A S H B U R N (3) After a service of fourteen years, Dr. Edward Wight Washburn, Professor of Ceramic Chemistry, has resigned in order to take up work with the National Research Council. Professor Washburn has rendered the University notable service and we are sorry to have him leave. I have accepted his resignation. This report was received for record. LEAVE OF A B S E N C E FOR PROFESSOR FAIRL.IE (4) At his request, approved by Dean Babcock, I recommend that Professor J. A. Fairlie be given leave of absence on half-pay for the second semester of the next academic year. On motion of Mr. Hoit, this recommendation was concurred in. P A G E A N T OF PROGRESS EXPOSITION (5) Believing that the University should be represented again at the Chicago Exposition next summer, I recommend according to the suggestion of the Supervising Architect that the sum of $1500 be appropriated to meet the expense of the University's exhibit at the Pageant of Progress. On motion of Mr. Noble, this recommendation was concurred in. The appropriation from the Reserve and Contingent fund was made by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Blake, Mrs. Busey, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Grigsby, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Noble; no, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mr. Herbert, Mr. Small, Mr. Trimble. LOAN F U N D OF T H E WOMAN'S ORGANIZATION OF T H E CHICAGO RETAIL. DRUGGISTS' ASSOCIATION (6) A report of the action of the President of the University approving a request from the Woman's Organization of the Chicago Retail Druggists' Association that their loan fund be open to men as well as to women. This report was received for record. A P P O I N T M E N T OF ASSOCIATE D E A N OF M E N (7) A recommendation that Mr. Arthur Ray Warnock be appointed Associate Dean of Men, for three years beginning September 1, 1922, at a salary of $5,000 a year. On motion of Mrs. Blake, this appointment was made. L A N D A T 1 7 4 5 FLOURNOY S T R E E T , CHICAGO (8) At the meeting of December 13, 1921 (Minutes, p. 136, item 9) the purchase of the property at 1745 Flournoy Street, Chicago, was authorized at a price of $2,800, or so much thereof as might be necessary, and an appropriation was made for the purpose. In accordance with this action, the property has been purchased. During the negotiations, however, it developed that there is a mortgage of $1,450 on the property which will have to run to maturity, or to January 10, 1927. Accordingly, the sum of $1,000 has been paid in cash as part of the purchase price of this property, $225.50
