GOULD, Assistant Food Production Manager, Illini Union, beginning September 2, 1952, at an annual salary of $2,700 plus meals valued at $168. 11. MRS. JANET S. On motion of Mr. Johnston, these appointments were confirmed.

APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR THOMAS J . DOLAN AS HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THEORETICAL A N D APPLIED MECHANICS (3) The Dean of the College of Engineering recommends the appointment of Thomas J. Dolan, Research Professor of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, as Professor and Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, on indefinite tenure beginning December 1, 1952, at a salary of $12,000 an academic year. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, this appointment was approved.

ACTING DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (4) Pending the appointment of a new dean of the College of Education to replace Dean Willard B. Spalding, who will leave the service of the University at the end of the current calendar year, it is necessary to appoint an acting dean. The Policy Committee of the College of Education has requested that the acting dean be someone not on the faculty of the College. Accordingly, 1 recommend the appointment of Dr. Robert G. Bone, Professor of History and Director of the Division of General Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, as Acting Dean of the College of Education beginning December 20, 1952, and continuing until further notice but not later than September I, 1953, at an additional salary at the rate of $1,200 a year (on Y basis), the division of his time and duties between his present positions and that of the acting deanship to be subject to the approval of the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the President of the University.

On motion of Mr. Johnston, this appointment was approved.
