HEADSHIP OF T H E DEPARTMENT O F MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING (8) On recommendation of the Dean of the College of Engineering and with the concurrence of the Provost and the Dean of the Graduate College, I recommend the appointment of Thomas A. Read, presently Associate Professor of Metallurgy at Columbia University, as Professor of Metallurgy and Head of the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering on indefinite tenure beginning August i, 1954, at an annual salary of $11,000 ( A basis). The headship of this Department has been vacant since the resignation last year of Professor Harold L. Walker. In the meantime, Professor W. R. Chedsey has been serving as Acting Head. O n m o t i o n of M r . H e r r i c k , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s a p p r o v e d . APPOINTMENTS TO T H E FACULTY (9) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. HAROLD H . DRAPER, Assistant Professor of Animal Nutrition in the Department of Animal Science ( C & S ) , beginning September I, 1954, at an annual salary of $6,000 ( D Y ) . 2. WALTER C. JACOB, Professor of Agronomy ( C & S ) , beginning September 1, 1954, at an annual salary of $9,000 ( D Y ) . 3. VICTOR H . RUMSEY, Professor of Electrical Engineering, beginning September 1, 1954, at an annual salary of $8,100 ( A ) . ' 4. JACK WOOD, Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning, in the Department of City Planning and Landscape Architecture, beginning September 1, 1954, at an annual salary of $6,600 ( A ) . O n m o t i o n of M r . N i c k e l l , t h e s e a p p o i n t m e n t s w e r e c o n f i r m e d . APPOINTMENTS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS CITIZENS COMMITTEE (10) At its meetings on December 16, 1953, and January 19, 1954, the Board of Trustees approved appointments to the reactivated University of Illinois Citizens Committee. I now submit the following supplemental nominations for appointment to that Committee. These have already been approved by the Executive Committee of the Board.
