C U R R I C U L U M IN NURSING (11) T h e faculty of the School of Nursing and the University Senate recommend the establishment of a four-year collegiate program in nursing leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing according to the following plan. Students will be admitted to the professional part of the program in September, 1954. T h e entire program, preprofessional and professional, will also go into effect at that time. (Several students currently enrolled in the prenursing curriculum of the Affiliation Program in Nursing have completed the proposed preprofessional program in preparation for admission to the School of Nursing in September, 1954.) Admission to the Preprofessional Curriculum. An applicant for admission to this curriculum ( a ) must meet the general requirements for admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and ( b ) must rank in the upper So per cent of her high school graduating class, or have completed a minimum of fifteen semester hours of acceptable college work with an average of not less than 3.0. Admission to the Professional Curriculum. The number of students admitted to the professional curriculum is limited by the facilities of the School of Nursing. Selections for admission to this curriculum are made by the Committee on Admissions after a careful study of scholastic record, aptitude, and health examinations, and such evidence of personal characteristics essential for nursing as is required by the Committee. A n interview with representatives of the faculty of the School of Nursing is required. A University scholarship average of 3.0 is a minimum requirement. Candidates must have received a grade of at least " C " in prerequisite courses (chemistry and biology or zoology). Admission to transfer students is governed by the same regulations applicable to other students in the curriculum. Transfer students in all but exceptional cases must complete all eleven quarters of the professional phase of the curriculum in the School of Nursing. General Description. T h e curriculum consists of a minimum of two semesters in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and eleven quarters in the School of Nursing in Chicago. T h e work is divided into t w o levels. T h e two semesters in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences constitute t h e preprofessional curriculum. T h e eleven quarters in the School of Nursing constitute the professional phase of t h e curriculum and include related academic (nonprofessional) courses. Provision is made for one summer session in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences during t h e third year in order that students may have an opportunity to take selected electives on a more mature level than would be possible in the freshman (preprofessional) period. Specific Graduation Requirements. A candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing must meet the following general requirements: pay all indebtedness to t h e University, obtain passing grades in all required courses in the curriculum, and have completed the four-year curriculum with an over-all average of " C " for the total number of 216 quarter hours required for the degree. In all but exceptional cases, at least eleven quarters of professional education and experience must be taken in residence in t h e School of Nursing, and in all cases, a minimum of at least one year (forty-five quarter hours of senior level professional courses) must be taken in residence in the School of Nursing.
