UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

1371

The present personnel of the Committee is Professor W. E. Britton of the College of Law, Chairman; Professor H . M. Gray of the Department of Economics ; and Director G. P. Tuttle of the Office of Admissions and Records, Secretary. Professor Britton is retiring from University service at the end of the current academic year, and I am reconstituting the Committee as follows effective September I, 1954: Professor H. M. Gray, Chairman (until August 31, 1957) ; Associate Professor Charles H . Bowman of the College of Law (until August 31, i960) ; and Director G. P. Tuttle, Secretary (ex officio). The present members of the Committee have served for many years, and it seems to me that periodical changes in its personnel would be desirable in accordance with our usual practice in other University committees. Accordingly, I have set up a plan for such rotation which will ultimately provide for the appointment of the Director of Admissions and Records as an ex officio member and the other two members for six-year terms. Appointments to this Committee do not require the approval of the Board of Trustees, but I am reporting my action simply for the record. I also wish to take this occasion to record the fullest appreciation of Professor Britton's splendid service as a member and Chairman of the Committee on Accountancy since 1924.

This report was received for record. On motion of Mr. Herrick, the Secretary was requested to express to Professor Britton the Board's appreciation of his services as member and Chairman of the Committee on Accountancy.

APPOINTMENT TO BOARD OF EXAMINERS IN ACCOUNTANCY (5) On nomination of the Committee on Accountancy, I recommend the appointment of Mr. Kenneth McCracken of the legal firm of Bell, Boyd, Marshall, and Lloyd, 135 South LaSalle Street, Chicago, Illinois, to the Board of Examiners in Accountancy for a period of three years beginning July 1, 1954, to replace Mr. James A. Velde, the present law member of the Board whose term will expire.

On motion of Mr. Bissell, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENT TO GEORGE A. MILLER VISITING PROFESSORSHIP (6) On nomination of the Head of the Department of Mathematics, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Dean of the Graduate College, I recommend the appointment of Dr. Roger Jean Henry Godement, now Professor at the University of Nancy, Nancy, France, as the first George A. Miller Visiting Professor of Mathematics for one year from September 1, 1954, at a salary of $10,000 ( D basis).

On motion of Mr. Johnston, this appointment was approved.

HEADSHIP OF ILLUSTRATION STUDIOS IN T H E CHICAGO PROFESSIONAL COLLEGES (7) Professor Tom S. Jones, Head of the Illustration Studios in the Chicago Professional Colleges, will retire September I, 1954. On nomination of the Dean of the College of Medicine and with the concurrence of the Chairman of the Administrative Committee for the Chicago Professional Colleges, the Provost, and the Dean of the Graduate College, I recommend the appointment of A. Hooker Goodwin, now Professor of Medical Illustration at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as Professor of Medical and Dental Illustration and Head of the Illustration Studios in the Chicago Professional Colleges on indefinite tenure beginning September 1, 1954, a t a salary of $9,000 ( A Y basis). (This is the salary of the position at present.) Professor Hooker was formerly (1048-1950) on the staff of the Illustration Studios of the University of Illinois. In the past this activity has been budgeted under the College of Medicine although it serves all Chicago Professional divisions. There is general agreement that it should be placed under the Office of the Vice-President. As soon as practicable it is the intention that this be done. Its functions of service to the College of Medicine, as well as to all other divisions, will not be changed.

On motion of Mrs. Watkins, this appointment was approved.
