resignation of Mr. Grosse would leave the Board without any accountants who had previous experience with the C.P.A. examinations. Hence the reappointment of Mr. Waggoner, who is willing to continue for the limited period indicated, is desirable. These nominees are willing to serve for the periods indicated if appointed. I concur in these recommendations.

On motion of Mr. Grange, these appointments were approved.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR J O H N T. FLANAGAN (3) Professor John T . Flanagan of the Department of English has been granted a sabbatical leave of absence on one-half pay for the academic year 1952-1953. He has requested that this be changed to leave of absence without pay for the same period so that he may accept a lectureship under a Fulbright grant, one semester to be spent at the University of Bordeaux and one semester at the University of Montpellier in France. I recommend that Professor Flanagan's leave be cancelled, without prejudice, and that he be granted leave without pay for one year from September I, 1952-

On motion of Mr. Fornof, this recommendation was approved.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY (4) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. WILLIAM H . MOSBERG, Research Assistant Professor of Neurology, in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Engineering Experiment Station, beginning March I, 1952, without salary ( G ) . 2. ELMER M. PLEIN, Associate Professor of Pharmacy, beginning September 1, 1952, at an annual salary of $7,500 ( A ) . 3. WILLIAM E. RANDALL, J R . , Assistant Professor of Recreation, in the Department of Physical Education for Men, beginning September I, 1952, at an annual salary of $5,200 ( D ) . 4. HIDEO SASAKI, Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture, beginning September 1, 1952, at an annual salary of $4,500 ( B ) . 5. SHELDON W . WILLIAMS, Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Experiment Station, beginning June I, 1952, at an annual salary of $1,650 ( A Y 2 5 ) ; also paid $4,950 from the United States Department of Agriculture.

On motion of Mrs. Holt, these appointments were confirmed.

ACTING DEAN OF THE GRADUATE COLLEGE (5) I recommend the appointment of Professor Robert E. Johnson, Head of the Department of Physiology, to serve also as Acting Dean of the Graduate College for one year from September I, 1952, at a total salary of $14,500 for the period on a "Y" basis. Professor Johnson will continue as Head of the Department of Physiology, but will be relieved of some of his teaching. H e will succeed Professor Frederick T. Wall of the Department of Chemistry who is serving as Acting Dean during the current year.

On motion of Mr. Nickell, this appointment was approved.

CHAIRMAN OF DEPARTMENT O F ECONOMICS (6) I recommend the appointment of Professor H. K. Allen of the Department of Economics as Chairman of the Department for a period of two years beginning July 1, 1952, at an annual salary of $11,000 on a Y basis. T h e Dean of the College of Commerce and Business Administration and the Executive Committee of the Department unanimously recommend this appointment. Dean Paul Green has been serving as Acting Chairman of the Department since February 1 and prior thereto Acting Dean R. R. Hudelson served as Acting Chairman.

On motion of Mr. Johnston, this appointment was approved.
