the University is appointed to that position. A similar plan was set up for the University Retirement System of Illinois and has proved very satisfactory.

On motion of Mr. Grange, the Board of Trustees authorized the offer of these facilities to the Merit Board and approved the plan as recommended.

BUSINESS REFERRED TO COMMITTEE O N GENERAL POLICY

President Livingston stated that he was referring to the Committee on General Policy for its consideration and advice to the Board two letters he had received; one from Mrs. Eunice Cunningham Creamer, Champaign, Illinois, concerning the operation of the Illini Union Bookstore, and the other from Mr. Harley H. Harmon, Urbana, Illinois, concerning the exemption of certain University properties in Urbana from local real estate taxes. These letters were turned over to Mr. Johnston, Chairman of the Committee.

PATENT O F IMPROVEMENT IN COAL COKE A N D BURNING MAGAZINE STOVES

The Secretary reported that he has received the original U. S. Letters Patent No. 2564713, issued August 21, 1951, to the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois by assignment from Associate Professor John C. Miles of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
