(28) Mr. George R. Carr of the Class of 1901 has offered the University of Illinois a collection of about 2,000 items on the history of Chicago and early railroad history, including also material and numerous autographed letters of famous personalities relating to Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. The Acquisition Department of the University Library estimates this collection has a value of $10,000. Mr. Carr has indicated his intention of supplementing this gift with similar items later. I have accepted this offer on behalf of the University and I am pleased to report it to the Board for official record.

GIFT OF MERCK A N D COMPANY, I N C . TO ESTABLISH KARL FOLKERS LECTURE SERIES IN CHEMISTRY

(29) Merck and Company, Inc., Rahway, New Jersey, has given the University $12,500 to establish for a period of years the "Karl Folkers Lecture Series in Chemistry." The principal and income of this grant is to be expended over a period of not less than fifteen years for annual lectures if feasible (although they may be omitted for a year or two to accumulate funds for special lectures) primarily in the fields of organic chemistry and biochemistry but without excluding other fields. A similar grant has been offered to the University of Wisconsin. On the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Chemistry, I have accepted this grant and have expressed to the Chairman of the Board of Merck and Company the appreciation of the University.

REPORT OF GIFTS A N D GRANTS RECEIVED BY T H E UNIVERSITY

(30) The following gifts and grants of funds received by the University have been accepted by the President in accordance with the statutory procedure and are now being reported for official record. For the Colleges and Schools at Urbana-Champaign A. Undergraduate Scholarships, Prizes, and Other Financial Aids 1. Advertising Executives Club of Chicago, $150 for a scholarship in advertising, School of Journalism and Communications. 2. Mr. Robert Allerton, Hawaii, $800 for the continuation of the Robert Allerton Traveling Scholarships in Architecture for 1951. 3. Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, $250 for scholarships for the academic year 1951-1952. 4. Chicago Farmers, Chicago, $500 for a scholarship in agriculture for the academic year 1951-1952. 5. Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio Railroad Company, Jackson, Tennessee, $2,200 for seven scholarships in agriculture and home economics for the academic year 1951-1952. 6. Illinois Association for the Crippled, Inc., $450 for scholarships in occupational therapy. 7. Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers: a. $600 for scholarships for the academic year 1951-1952. b. $250 for scholarships for students in the field of special education. 8. Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs, $2,763.50 to be added to the Occupational Therapy Scholarship Fund. 9. Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs, Third District, $1,320 to be added to the Third District fund for scholarships in occupational therapy. 10. Kroger Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, $1,200 for scholarships in agriculture and home economics in the amount of $200 each.
