On motion of Mr. McLaughlin, this resolution was adopted. At this point, Governor Stevenson took his place with the Board. He spoke of his pleasure in having the Board meet with him at the Executive Mansion, and of his appreciation of the prompt action of President Stoddard and the Board in deciding to close the Galesburg Undergraduate Division so that the plant could be used by the Department of Public Welfare.

BUDGETARY DISCUSSION

In a short discussion of budgetary matters, President Williamson expressed the appreciation of the Board for the appropriations for the University approved by the Governor in his budget. President Stoddard spoke of the urgency of the item of one million dollars for remodeling and fire prevention in the Noyes Laboratory of Chemistry ($230,000), remodeling the Old Power Plant so that the space could be used ($400,000), and repowering the Physics Building to secure adequate power and to reduce the fire hazard ($270,000). The Provost and the Comptroller supported the President's position. Governor Stevenson expressed his regret that the expected income of the State would not provide for any additions to his budget. He said that he would give this item a high priority in case additional income were to materialize. The Board recessed for luncheon. OPEN SESSION After luncheon, the Board convened in open session. Governor Stevenson was present during the afternoon.
