REMODELING OF PROPERTY AT 1 2 0 9 WEST ILLINOIS STREET, URBANA, FOR STAFF HOUSING (5) On July 21, 1948 (Minutes, page 3 ) , on the recommendation of the Committee on Special Appropriations and Nonrecurring Expenditures, the Board of Trustees approved the purchase of the property at 1209 West Illinois Street, Urbana, at a cost of $16,340. Previously (Minutes, February 21, 1948, page 973) the adjoining vacant property at 1205-1207 West Illinois Street was purchased at a cost of $5,95°- An assignment of $6,000 was made to convert it into a parking lot. T h e property at 1209 has on it an old, two-story house in rather poor condition. I t "was contemplated that this house would be razed and the two areas used for parking, in which case a larger appropriation will be required. Further investigation shows that the house can be remodeled into four modest out satisfactory apartments for family use. In view of the continued need for additional housing for University staff members, the Provost recommends an estimated expenditure of $12,000. I t may be several years before the land is required for a major University building and during that time at least a part of this investment can be recovered.
