MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE

D E C E M B E R 28, 1948

T h e Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois met at the University Club, 76 East Monroe Street, Chicago, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 1948. M r . John R. Fornof, Chairman, M r . Chester R. Davis, a n d M r . P a r k Livingston, members of the Committee, were present; also D r . George D . Stoddard, P r e s i dent, Mr. A. J. J a n a t a , Assistant to the President, M r . Lloyd Morey, Comptroller, and M r . H . E . Cunningham, Secretary. MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT STODDARD T h e E x e c u t i v e Committee considered the following m a t t e r s presented by the President of the University. INAUGURATION OF GOVERNOR (1) The University of Illinois Band has been invited to play at the inauguration of Governor-elect Adlai E. Stevenson in Springfield on January 10, 1949. I have authorized the participation of the band in these ceremonies. This report w a s received for record. GIFT OF REMBRANDT PAINTING FROM MR. AND MRS. MERLE J . TREES (2) Under the conditions outlined in their letter of November 29, 1937, offering to establish the "Emily Nichols Trees (Class of 1905) and Merle Jay Trees (Class of 1907) Collection" of paintings at the University of Illinois, and pursuant to the resolution of acceptance adopted by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees on December 18, 1947 (Minutes, page 587), Mr. and Mrs. Trees offer the University, as their gift for 1948, one-half interest in their painting "Portrait of Amsterdam Burgher" by Rembrandt. As evidence of this gift they have presented deeds of gift whereby each conveys to the University of Illinois an undivided one-quarter interest in and to this painting. They have submitted a certificate of appraisal from the A r t Institute of Chicago, valuing this painting at $65,000. I recommend acceptance of this gift. The two deeds of gift and the appraisal will be given to the Secretary of the Board for official record. On motion of M r . Davis, this painting w a s accepted with great appreciation. GIFT OF GAUGUIN PAINTING FROM MR. AND MRS. MERLE J . TREES (2a) Mr. and Mrs. Merle J. Trees offer also an additional painting "Man in Field," by Paul Gauguin, to become a part of the "Emily Nichols Trees (Class of 1905) and Merle Jay Trees (Class of 1907) Collection." This painting is now at the University. Mr. and Mrs. Trees submit a certificate of appraisal from the Art Institute of Chicago, valuing this painting at $6,000. I recommend acceptance. On motion of M r . Davis, this painting w a s accepted with keen appreciation. APPOINTMENTS TO THE CITIZENS COMMITTEE AND TO THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF T H E COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (3) I recommend the appointment of the following as members of the Citizens Committee of the University of Illinois and their assignment to the Advisory Committee of the College of Education (new members are indicated by an asterisk) :
