Doctor Brodie has been serving as Acting Dean of the College of Dentistry since September 1, 1044. A special committee of the faculty, appointed by the Vice-President to study the qualifications of candidates who might be considered for the deanship of the College of Dentistry, has unanimously recommended the appointment of Doctor Brodie. I concur in this recommendation. On motion of M r . McLaughlin, this appointment was made as recommended.

MAJOR APPOINTMENTS AUTHORIZED

(3) I request authority to appoint heads of the departments of Geography, Food Technology, and Dairy Husbandry. Negotiations are now under way with desirable candidates. On motion of Mr. Fornof, the President of the University was authorized to make these appointments.

BOARD MEMBERS NOT TO SERVE ON COLLEGE COMMITTEES

After discussion of matters connected with the appointment of college and departmental advisory committees, the Board, on motion of General Davis, voted that the appointment of members of the Board to serve on such committees was not consistent with the best public policy.

DISCHARGE OF OTIS TAYLOR

Mr. McLaughlin presented the following report. The Committee on Civil Service and Employees, having reviewed the Charges against Otis Taylor, an employee of the University of Illinois, preferred against him by the Appointing Officer of the University, the Answer thereto, the evidence and exhibits introduced at the Hearing on the Charges before the Hearing Committee duly appointed by the Board of Trustees, the Report of the Hearing Committee, the Objections thereto by the Respondent and the Reply thereto by the Appointing Officer, and the entire Record in the case, (1) concurs in the Findings of fact, conclusions of law and Recommendations of the Hearing Committee, and (2) recommends to the Board of Trustees the adoption of the following resolution: Be it resolved that Otis Taylor be and he is hereby discharged from his employment by the University of Illinois as of the date of his suspension therefrom and that the Appointing and other Officers of the University are hereby directed to take such steps as may be necessary to carry this Resolution into effect.

On motion of Mr. McLaughlin, this resolution was adopted.

D I S C H A R G E O F R. C. ELLIOTT

Mr. McLaughlin, as Chairman of the Committee on Civil Service and Employees, reported to the Board that on J u n e 27, 1947, Ronald C. Elliott, a janitor employed by the University, was suspended for a period of thirty days on a charge of converting to his own use certain property owned by third parties then lawfully on the premises of the University of Illinois; that on the same date there was filed with the Secretary of the Board by Donald E. Dickason, Director of Nonacademic Personnel and the Appointing Officer of Ronald C. Elliott, an application for the discharge of Ronald C. Elliott; that an investigation showed that M r . Elliott was guilty of the charges and confessed thereto; that Ronald C. Elliott did not demand a hearing on said application for discharge; that the time for filing such demand has expired. M r .
