SPECIAL APPROPRIATIONS FOR NONRECURRING EXPENDITURES

(4) T h e Committee on Nonrecurring Appropriations recommends assignments of funds from the General Reserve as follows: Urbana-Champaign 1. Department of Entomology, equipment for research $ 2 400 2. College of Agriculture, equipment and alterations in the Dairy Manufactures Building 15 000 3. Graduate College, fifty graduate fellowships for the 1956 Summer Session 12 500 4. College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, remodeling in Altgeld Hall 41 550 5. Library, packing, transporting, and organizing the Carl Sandburg library, purchased for the University by the University of Illinois Foundation 10 000 6. Physical Plant Department, construction of parking facilities 11 400 7. College of Veterinary Medicine, construction of two inoculation booths I 900 Chicago Professional Colleges 8. APPROPRIATION FOR ACCIDENT COMPENSATION

(5) F o r the past several years the budgetary provision for payment of awards authorized by the Committee on Accident Compensation in cases of injuries to University employees has been inadequate to meet the claims, and supplementary assignments have been required from time to time. There has been no significant variation during the past fifteen years in the total claims paid in relation to the payroll, but changes in the Workmen's Compensation and Occupational Disease Acts have increased the benefits payable. T h e budget for the current fiscal year provides $18,000 for these payments and the funds are almost exhausted. T h e Chairman of the Committee on Accident Compensation and the Comptroller recommend an assignment of $10,000 to supplement this budgetary provision. I concur and recommend an assignment of $10,000 from the operating budget reserve for this purpose.

APPROPRIATION FOR GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS FOR 195 6 - 5 7

(6) On request of the Dean of the Graduate College and with the concurrence of the Provost, I recommend that an appropriation of $150,000 be made for graduate fellowships for 1956-57, $132,000 to be assigned for fellowships for graduate study at Urbana-Champaign and $18,000 for fellowships at the Chicago Professional Colleges. This is the regular assignment for fellowships and funds a r e available in the operating budget for the current biennium. The Board of Trustees has authorized an increase from $900 to $1,200 in the stipends of fellowships. T h e Committee on Nonrecurring Appropriations will recommend an allocation of $24,000 for graduate fellowships to maintain the
