TRIBUTE TO DR. DAVID KINLEY

Mr. McKelvey presented the following tribute to Dr. David Kinley.

T h e Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois records with deep sorrow the death on December 3, 1944, of Dr. David Kinley, President Emeritus of the University. Doctor Kinley was born in Dundee, Scotland, on August 2, 1861. H e came to the United States with his father in 1872. H e received his early education in this country at the Punchard F r e e School and at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. H e was graduated from Yale University with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1884. After teaching and serving as high school principal in N o r t h Andover, Massachusetts, he entered the Johns Hopkins University in 1890 for graduate study. In 1892 he went to the University of Wisconsin where he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1893. In later years he received honorary degrees of Doctor of Laws from Illinois College in 1908, from the University of Wisconsin in 1918, from the University of Nebraska in 1921, and from his alma mater, Yale University, in 1924. H e was married to Kate Ruth Neal of Mount Vernon, Ohio, on June 22, 1897. Mrs. Kinley died in Shanghai, China, in April, 1931, while she and Doctor Kinley were traveling during the year immediately following his retirement from the University of Illinois. Two daughters, Mrs. Harriet K. Brooks and Mrs. John Robert Gregg, survive. While a graduate student at Johns Hopkins, Doctor Kinley was an instructor in W o m a n ' s College, Baltimore, and while at the University of Wisconsin he was a fellow and assistant in Economics. Doctor Kinley came to the University of Illinois in 1893 a s Assistant Professor of Economics. T h e following year he became Professor of Economics and Dean of the College of Literature and Arts. H e organized the first courses in commerce in 1902 and directed them until the establishment of the College of Commerce and Business Administration in 1915. H e served as Dean of the Graduate School from 1906-1919, as Vice President of the University from 1914-1919, and as Acting President, 1919-1920. Following the retirement of Edmund Janes James in 1920, Doctor Kinley was elected President of the University and served for ten years until he retired on July 1, 1930. H e was an economist with an international reputation and an educational statesman of the first rank. H e served the University of Illinois loyally and with distinction for thirty-seven years in several important positions. His administration as President of the University covered a period of great development and expansion. H e was intensely devoted to all public service. His personal code of ethics, his honesty, integrity, and loyalty have been an inspiration to generations of University students and to his colleagues on the faculty. Be it hereby resolved that as a part of this tribute to Doctor David Kinley the Board of Trustees also records its highest appreciation of his life and his many years of faithful, distinguished service to the University of Illinois. And be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be sent by the Secretary of the Board to Doctor Kinley's daughters with a letter expressing the sympathy of the members of the Board.

Oh motion of Mr. McKelvey, this resolution was adopted by unanimous vote.

The Board considered the following matters presented by the President of the University.
