PURCHASES RECOMMENDED (21) T h e Comptroller recommends that the following purchases submitted by the Purchasing Agent be authorized: 1. Standard medical microscopes, complete with cases and mechanical stages, for the Student Supply Store (Chicago), from the A. S. Aloe Company, St. Louis, Missouri: lo instruments at a total cost of $1,453.50; 50 instruments (engraved in accordance with instructions) at a total cost of $7,371.50. 2. One deep-well pump for No. 7 well (200 g.p.m. capacity), for the Physical Plant Department, from the J. P . Miller Artesian Well Company, the lowest bidder, at their price of $1,171. 3. One Model ML DoAll Contour Machine, for the Physics Department, from the Continental Machines, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota, at their price of $1,769.40. 4. Three thousand grams of dl-threonine from Merck and Company, Inc., Rahway, New Jersey, for the Department of Chemistry (research work on amino acids), at a total cost of approximately $3,000. PURCHASES AUTHORIZED (22) T h e following is a report of purchases proposed by the Purchasing Agent and authorized by the Comptroller as emergency items: 1. 1,100 tons screenings coal, for use at Abbott Power Plant during November, 1944, from Taylor-English Coal Company, Danville, Illinois, the lowest bidder, at a total cost of $2,860. 2. 2,000 grams l( + )-lysine monohydrochloride; 1,000 grams dl-isoleucine;—for the Chemistry Department, for use with research in amino acids being carried on in cooperation with the Nutrition Foundation by Doctor Rose, from Merck and Company, Inc., Rahway, New Jersey, at a total cost of $1400. 3. 36,000 pounds 24^4 x 37J4—40 pound English finish book paper, from Bradner Smith & Company, Chicago, the lowest bidder, at a cost of approximately $2,767.05. 4. 1,000 grams dl-threonine 200 grams dl-alpha-alanine 200 grams dl-aspartic acid 500 grams dl-valine 500 grams 1( — )-tyrosine 500 grams dl-isoleucine 2 lbs. 1 ( + )-histidine 1,000 grams dl-phenylalanine monohydrochloride 500 grams dl-methionine for the Chemistry Department, for use with research in amino acids being carried on in cooperation with the Rockefeller Foundation by Dr. Rose, from Merck and Company, Inc., Rahway, New Jersey, at a total cost of $1,744.05. 5. 2,000 tons screenings coal, requested by the Physical Plant Department for use at Abbott Power Plant during December, 1044, from Taylor-English Coal Company, Danville, Illinois, the lowest bidder, at a total approximate cost of $5,200. 6. One car load (approximately 1,800 bushels) No. 2 yellow shelled corn, for use at the Dixon Springs Experiment Station, from the Evans Elevator Company, Champaign, Illinois, at a total cost of approximately $2,079. 7. Three cars No. 1 green leafy alfalfa hay for the Dairy Husbandry Department, from the Shofstall H a y Company, Kearney, Nebraska, at a total cost of approximately $1,500. 8.
