14. Eight Switlik quick attachable seat-pack parachutes, for the Institute of Aeronautics, from the Illini Airport, at a cost of $1,024. 15. Two model 120A Cessna airplanes and one model 140 Cessna airplane, for the Institute of Aeronautics, from T a y n o r - H a r r i s , at a cost of $8,738.50. 16. Six suites (including dresser and mirror, chest of drawers, beds, and night tables) of mahogany furniture, for rooms on the fourth floor of the Illini Union, from Marshall Field & Company, Chicago, at a cost of $1,498.58 f.o.b. Mount Airy, N o r t h Carolina. 17. Coal, 6" mine-run, 1,500 tons, for the Physical Plant Department, from the Taylor-English Coal Company, Danville, at a cost of $5,025. 18. One thousand 18" x 18" x oo" steel storage cabinets, for use in temporary housing units in lieu of dressers or chests, which are not obtainable, from Jack Sheean, Agent for the Interior Steel Equipment Company, Bloomington, at a cost of $13,950. 19. One air compressor with unloader, air filter and silencer, with 25 H . PURCHASES RECOMMENDED (9) T h e Purchasing Agent has proposed and the Comptroller recommends the following purchases. Unless otherwise specified, the purchase in each case is recommended on the basis of lowest bid, ceiling price, or because the item is noncompetitive. I concur in the recommendations. 1. One "Norelco" Geiger counter X-ray spectrometer, for the Department of Chemistry, from the N o r t h American Philips Company, Inc., New York City, at a cost of $5,058 f.o.b. Mt. Vernon, New York. 2. Twenty-seven wooden grain bins, including foundations located at the University of Illinois South F a r m , Urbana, for the College of Agriculture, from the Commodity Credit Corporation, Chicago, at a cost of $2,176. 3. One glassworking lathe, for use in building betatron tubes and research apparatus, for the Department of Physics, from the Litton Engineering Laboratories, at a cost of $4,873 f.o.b. Redwood City, California. 4. Eight thousand tons of Coal screenings for the Chicago Physical Plant Department, from the Consumers Company, Chicago, at a cost of $44,000. 5. Approximately five tons of 25 per cent rag bond paper with the University of Illinois watermark, for the Office Supply Store, from the Dwight Brothers Paper Company, Chicago, at a cost of approximately $2,100. GIFTS A N D GRANTS OF F U N D S FOR RESEARCH A N D OTHER PURPOSES (10) A report of the following gifts and grants of funds for research and other purposes received by the University since the last report (November

1. Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs, $2,900 additional for scholarships in Occupational Therapy. T h e total amount of gifts to date from this Federation is $8,400. 2. Third Congressional District, Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs, $600 for the Scholarship F u n d in Occupational Therapy of the Third Congressional District. 3. Mrs. Margaret Anderson, Morris, Illinois, $2,500 to endow a scholarship fund for students in the School of Music to be known as the "William Anderson Scholarship in Music" in memory of her late husband. Since the endowment will not produce sufficient income to provide for a scholarship until the fund has been invested for at least one year, Mrs. Anderson has given the University $170 to cover the scholarship for 1045-1046. 4. Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers, Chicago, $600 for the continuation of undergraduate scholarships.
