research by Professor W. C. Rose, of the Department of Chemistry, on the amino acid requirements of man, 8. Mead, Johnson and Company, Evansville, Indiana, $2,400 for the support of research work on amino acids in the Department of Pediatrics under the direction of Dr. J. H . Hess. 9. Middle West Soil Improvement Committee of the National Fertilizer Association, $500 for the continuation of research on the response of soybeans to soil treatment and fertilizer practices, for one year from May 1, 1942, by the Agricultural Experiment Station.

MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS O F UNIVERSITY STAFF MEMBERS (22) At the meeting of the Board on May 16, I presented estimates of staff, space, and budgetary requirements for carrying out the program of medical examinations for staff members which was adopted by the Board at its meeting on April 22. Action on this was deferred. Following are estimates prepared by the University Health Officer. Number of University Employees Urbana Departments _ 2,783 Chicago Departments, salaried staff and employees 1,025 (This does not include 527 clinical staff members.) Employees outside of Urbana and Chicago 621 (These are persons employed in various communities of the State where the University has experiment fields, such as Dixon Springs, and where other enterprises are being carried on.) Total, Employees 4,429 Staff Requirements—It will require the full-time services of four physicians working eight hours a day, to examine the employees of the University once a year. This is based on an estimate of five complete medical examinations a day by each physician (including medical histories, discussion of results of findings with individuals, and unavoidable delays). Space Requirements—The Health Service offices in both Champaign-Urbana and Chicago are in constant use from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will be necessary to provide four additional offices. The cost of the alterations is estimated at $3,000.
