GIFTS TO THE UNIVERSITY AND GRANTS OF FUNDS FOR VARIOUS PURPOSES (21) A report of the following gifts and grants of funds for various purposes received by the University since the last report:

Gifts

1. The Students' Mutual Benefit Hospital Fund, $900 for the purchase of an electrocardiograph, a stethograph, and a table for these instruments. 2. University Concert and Entertainment Board, $500 to apply on the purchase of a new piano in the Auditorium. 3. Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, specimens having an estimated value of $465, for use in the investigation of "Fatigue Tests of Welded Joints" being carried on in the Department of Civil Engineering. 4. Class of 1942, $664.82, to be set up as a scholarship fund to be administered by the Committee on Special Undergraduate Scholarships. 5. Family of the late Professor W. A. Foster, books and pamphlets for the University Library. 6. John Crerar Library of Chicago, to the Department of Botany, three valuable card indices: The Gray Herbarium Index, The Torrey Botanical Club Index, and The Index Algarum Universalis. 7. College of Dentistry, $189.84 resulting from the G. Walter Dittmar testimonial banquet, to the Gallie Emergency Fund, this fund now to be known as the Gallie-Dittmar Student Loan Fund. Grants for Research 1. E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Company, Wilmington, Delaware, $2,000 for the employment of a research assistant in Chemistry for Dr. H. R. Snyder (continuation of grant formerly given for research program of Dr. F . C. Fuson). 2. Cerophyl Laboratories, Inc., Kansas City, Mo., $1,200 for research in the Department of Botany dealing with the correlations between the various vitamins and other components in certain grasses; and $100 for research on proteins in grasses, this being a continuation of a research grant originally made by the American Dairies, Inc.
