PURCHASES AUTHORIZED (25) A report of the following purchases authorized by the President of the University in accordance with the University Statutes: i. Lumber for the Physical Plant Stock as follows: 8000 feet 1 inch B & Better Genuine Northern White Pine 2000 feet I J 4 inch B & Better Genuine Northern White Pine 2000 feet 2 inch B & Better Genuine Northern White Pine from the White Pine Lumber Company, Chicago, the lowest bidder, at a total cost of $1,426.00 f.o.b. Urbana. 2. Cast iron water main for auxiliary line to new Power Plant, from the American Cast Iron Pipe Company, Chicago, the lowest bidder, at a cost of $2,292.74 f.o.b. freight allowed to Urbana. 3. One Hayes x-ray diffraction unit, complete with power plant, one copper target x-ray tube, and four flat cassettes—from the Hayes Scientific Appliances, Urbana, at a cost of $1,700, less 2%, or $1,666 f.o.b. Urbana, installation included. 4. 3200 feet of four conductor No. 4 A.W.G. lead covered cable for the new Power Plant from the Middle States Electric Company, the lowest bidder, at a price of $2,438.40 f.o.b. Urbana, which includes $106 for reels which are returnable for credit. O n m o t i o n of M r . J e n s e n , t h e a c t i o n of t h e P r e s i d e n t in a u t h o r izing these p u r c h a s e s w a s confirmed. REPORT OF DEATH BENEFITS PAID (26) A report that the Comptroller has been authorized to pay the death benefits to the beneficiaries of the following members of the staff in accordance with the University Statutes and the terms of their employment: W. S. Goodspeed, University Mechanician—$487. Mr. Goodspeed was in the active service of the University from July I, 1905, to January 1, 1932, when he was retired. H e died on December 11, 1940.

PAINTINGS BY VISITING PROFESSORS O F ART (28) It is customary for each Carnegie Visiting Professor of A r t to execute, while at the University, a painting of a subject of his own choosing and to present it to the institution. T h e following have been presented to the University by Carnegie Visiting Professors of Art and Resident P a i n t e r s : Mr. Dale Nichols, 1930-1040, "I Cultivate My Garden." Mr. Robert Philipp, 1940-1941, a portrait of the President of the University.

On motion of Mr. Davis, these gifts were accepted with thanks.

EXEMPTION FROM FEES FOR MEMBERS OF STAFF (29) U n d e r the University of Illinois Statutes, members of the staff may register in University classes for credit at the rate of $2.50 per credit hour for undergraduate and professional work and $10.00 per unit for graduate work in Urbana and Chicago; but all individuals receiving a salary of $1,600 per year or less, who are registered in the Graduate School, are exempt from the payment of any fees in courses for graduate credit.
