This is supplementary to the lists of applications recommended to the Board of Trustees on March 14 and April 19, 1961, HEBBEKT GOLDSTEIN, Associate Professor of Education in the College of Education and in the Institute for Research on Exceptional Children, second semester (March 1 through August 31, 1962), one-half pay; to engage in curriculum research in the area of mental retardation, work to be done in the University of Oslo, Norway. ROBERT L, CARMTN, Associate Professor of Geography, second semester (March 1 through August 31, 1962), one-half pay; to conduct geographic research c m urban-rural relationships in the Coimbra region of Portugal. O n motion of M r , Hughes, these leaves were granted, as recommended.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FOREIGN DISPLACED STUDENTS

(12) In February, 1957, the Board of Trustees, on recommendation of the University Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, authorized fifteen tuition and fee scholarships for displaced foreign students or refugees who meet admission requirements. This authorization renewed and increased from ten to fifteen the number of scholarships for displaced foreign students previously authorized tiy the Board. The scholarships authorized in 1957 were for four years and will expire on August 31, 1961. The Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships recommends an extension of this scholarship program for a four-year period beginning in September, 1961. I concur.

On motion of Mrs. Watkins, the extension of this scholarship program was authorized.

CHANGES IN CURRICULA IN CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

(13) The Urbana-Champaign Senate has recommended certain changes in the curricula leading to Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, effective September I, 1961, these changes having previously been approved by the faculty of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Significant changes in the curriculum in chemistry include: Eighty-one hours of specifically required courses instead of ninety-two. Change in language requirement from two years of foreign language (French German, or Russian) to either two years of German or one year of German and one year of Russian. Addition of the following specific requirements with regard to electives: eigl-t semester hours from upper-level courses in chemistry in addition to those specifically required; twelve additional semester hours from advanced courts in chemistry, physics, mathematics and/or biological sciences; and ten semester hours selected from non-science areas. Significant changes in the curriculum in chemical engineering include: Deletion of the bioengi nee ring option (this option was offered for chemical «wineers particularly interested in the fermentation, pharmaceutical, and loos industries). . . . j, Removal of Chemistry 124, Quantitative Analysis, from first semester of sol*1';" more year, replaced by Chemistry 321, Chemical and Instrumental Analysisa new course, in the senior year. Removal of Chemical Engineering 377, Chemical Engineering Technology, as a requirement in the engineering option, replaced by a required advanced Ironical elective in chemical engineering (the engineering option is for chem'O engineers who intend to enter industry at the completion of the Bachelor oi Science degree). ..
