Professor of Psychiatry on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department beginning September 1, 1961, at an annual salary of $23,000 on full time, twelve months service basis. The nomination for this appointment was made by a search committee and is concurred in by the Acting Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges, the Dean of the Graduate College, and the Vice-President and provost. Dr, Sabshin will succeed Dr. Francis j . Gerty, who has served as Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry for twenty years, and who resigned his position effective January 1, 1961, and is retiring from University service to become Director of the Department of Public Welfare of Illinois. As an interim appointment, the Dean of the College of Medicine has recommended, the other recommending officers in the central administration concurring therein, the appointment of Dr. Paul E. Nielson, presently Associate Professor of Psychiatry, as Acting Head of the Department from January 1 through August jl, 1961, at a salary of $150 a month during this period, in addition to his salary of $14,000 a year as Associate Professor. I recommend approval of these appointments.

On motion of Mr. Clement, these appointments were approved.

REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR O F MUSIC DEGREE

(5) The Urbana-Champaign Senate recommends the following revision of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Music: Degree requirements are increased from 124 to a total of 130 semester hours plus the general University requirements in physical education and military training. In the instrumental and vocal curricula, two instead of three years of an applied minor will be required. In all options fourth-year mnsic theory (except in the composition major and music history courses) will become elective instead of required. Music 101, Rudiments of Theory, is changed from four to three semester hours of credit, Music 111 and 112, Music in Western Civilization, will be dropped, to be replaced by Music 213 and 214, The History and Appreciation of Music, which will be required of all School of Music students except History of Music majors; and credit for the latter courses will be increased from two to three semester hours. Music 300 and 301, Advanced Counterpoint, are changed in title and content, and from two to three semester hours of credit. Total electives up to thirty-five semester hours may be taken of which at least sixteen hours must be in the humanities in addition to the prescribed nonmusic courses. The Chairman and the Secretary of the Senate Coordinating Council indicate that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved I concur. On motion of M r s . Watkins, these revisions were approved.

C U R R I C U L U M IN T H E TEACHING OF RUSSIAN

(6) The Urbana-Champaign Senate recommends authorization of a curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Teacliing of Russian with a fifth year leading to the degree of Master of Arts. The undergraduate curriculum was designed by the University Council ou Teacher Education and has been approved by the College o£ Liberal Arts and Sciences. The five-year program leading to the master's degree has also been approved by the Graduate College. These curricula conform to the standard requirements for degrees in the teaching areas. A minimum of 123 semester hours, exclusive of the general university requirements in military training and physical education, is required for the bachelor's degree, and eight units of graduate work are required for the waster's degree. The Chairman and the Secretary of the Senate Coordinating Council indicate that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Wilkins, this curriculum was authorized.
