GRADUATE PROGRAM IN LINGUISTICS

(7) The Urbana-Champaign Senate recommends authorization of a graduate program leadiug to the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics. The program will be administered by an interdepartmental committee within the Division of Social Sciences appointed by the Dean of the College of Libera] Arts and Sciences with the approval of the Dean of the Graduate College and the President. The general requirements governing admission of all graduate studeuts •will apply: a grade-point average of at least 3.5 in the last sixty hours of undergraduate studies completed; a broad background in the liberal arts and sciences. Requirements for the master's degree are: at least eight units, six of which must be in linguistics, two chosen from 400-level courses and including Linguistics 402, Field Methods; the candidate must pass a comprehensive examination; the master's thesis is not required. Requirements for the doctor's degree are: sixteen units beyond the master's degree must be completed, eight of which must be in Linguistics 499, Research; an introductory course in statistics is required, in addition to the standard language requirements of the Graduate College; a candidate must select either one minor of at least four units, or two minors of at least two units each, the minors being related to the candidate's field of concentration; candidates must pass oral and written preliminary examination, and a final oral examination upon completion of a doctoral thesis; students are encouraged to attend at least one summer session of the Linguistics Institute of the Linguistics Society of America, for which four units of credit granted by the host university may be transferred. The Chairman and the Secretary of the Senate Coordinating Council indicate that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved, I concur.

On motion of Mr, Hughes, this graduate program was authorized.

GRADUATE PROGRAM IN NUCLEAR ENGINEERING

(8) The Board of Trustees has previously authorized a graduate program in nuclear engineering leading to the degree of Master of Science. The UrbanaChampaign Senate recommends the extension of this graduate curriculum to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Nuclear Engineering, according to the following conditions and requirements. The program will be administered by an interdepartmental committee within the College of Engineering appointed by the Dean of the College with the approval of the Dean of the Graduate College and the President. For admission to this program, the general regulations governing admission of all graduate students will apply: a bachelor's degree in engineering or in one of the physical sciences; a scholastic grade-point average of at least 3.7S in the last sixty semester hours of undergraduate studies; and three hours or one unil credit in advanced calculus, differential equations, atomic physics and nuclear physics, or their equivalents. Requirements for the doctor's degree aTe: a minimum of six units of graduate courses in nuclear engineering, excluding the thesis units; fulfillment of all general Graduate College requirements with respect to residence, credits, language proficiencies, and preliminary and final examinations; completion of an integrated program of advanced courses, as approved by the members of the gradual* teaching faculty in nuclear engineering; and an acceptable thesis. The Chairman and the Secretary of the Senate Coordinating Council indicate that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Johnston, this graduate program was authorized. At this point, Mr. Wirt Herrick and Mr. Richard A. Harewood joined the meeting.
