Advisers. Advisers to the Center for Advanced Study shall be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Dean of the Graduate College. Chosen from the most distinguished scholars, artists, and men of affairs in this country and abroad, they shall from time to time be invited to consult with the Dean, Director, or Policy Committee, on such matters as the selection of candidates, or the development of programs of the Center for Advanced Study. II. Administration Director. The Director of the Center for Advanced Study will serve as its executive officer and will report to the Dean of the Graduate College. H e shall be appointed for a renewable, two-year term by the Board of Trustees on the recommendation of the President. Candidates for Director shall be proposed by the Dean of the Graduate College in consultation with the professors in the Center. Policy Committee. T h e Policy Committee of the Center shall be composed of Professors in the Center for Advanced Study, the Director, and the Dean of the Graduate College, Chairman, ex officio, and shall be responsible for recommending the basic policies under which the Center shall operate. These basic policies shall be implemented and administered by the Director, assisted by a Steering Committee, the latter to be appointed by the Dean, and to include both Professors of the Center and other members of the University faculty. The Policy Committee may propose other types of affiliation with the Center — in addition to Professor, Associate, Lecturer, Fellow, and Adviser — at such times as it may deem appropriate. APPOINTMENT TO CENTER FOR ADVANCED STUDY (6) Upon recommendation of the Executive Committee of the Center for Advanced Study, and with the concurrence of the Dean of the Graduate College and the Executive Vice-President and Provost, I recommend that Dr. Alexander Turyn, Professor of the Classics, be appointed at a Professor in the Center for a period of two years beginning September 1, 1967. At the end of this period, Professor Turyn will have reached retirement age. Under the original charter of the Center, Professor Turyn was appointed a Member of the Center in September 1, 1962, for a period of five years. O n m o t i o n of M r . C l e m e n t , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s a p p r o v e d . CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, CHICAGO CIRCLE (7) T h e Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Chancellor at Chicago Circle recommend the appointment of Professor Robert V. Remini as Chairman of the Department of History at Chicago Circle for two years beginning September 1, 1967. T h e salary will be determined when the budget for 196768 is submitted to the Board for approval. This appointment is to replace Professor Stanley L. Jones who has been serving as Chairman of the Department and who has asked to be relieved of this administrative service so that he can devote full time to teaching and research. This recommendation is submitted after consultation with members of the Department and on nomination of its Executive Committee. The Executive Committee of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Dean of Faculties, and the Executive Vice-President and Provost have been consulted and concur in this recommendation. I recommend approval. O n m o t i o n of M r . G r i m e s , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s a p p r o v e d . HEADSHIP OF DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY, MEDICAL CENTER (8) T h e Dean of the College of Medicine and the Chancellor at the Medical Center campus recommend the appointment of Dr. Stephen B. Binkley as Professor on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department of Biological Chemistry in the College of Medicine beginning June 1, 1967, at an annual salary of $26,000 on a twelve-month service basis. Dr. Binkley has been serving as Acting Head of the Department since September 1, 1965.
