Revisions in its administrative and organizational structure are also required. The titles of those now holding appointment as Members of the Center for Advanced Study will be changed to Professors in the Center for Advanced Study; the present category of Associate Membership will be replaced by that of Associate. New types of affiliation with the Center shall include Distinguished Lecturer, Fellow, and Adviser. I. Organization Professors. Professors in the Center for Advanced Study shall be appointed by the Board of Trustees on the recommendation of the President. They shall be chosen from among the most distinguished, most productive, and most widely recognized scholars at the University of Illinois or elsewhere. Appointment to a Professorship in the Center for Advanced Study constitutes the highest form of academic recognition that the University can bestow upon members of its faculty. Selection of candidates shall be made by the Dean in consultation with an advisory selection committee of Center Professors. A Professor shall retain his status in his own department. T h e nature of his duties in the department will be worked out in consultation with the head or chairman of his department, the dean of his college, and the Dean of the Graduate College. Associates. Associates shall be appointed for one-year or two-year terms by the Board of Trustees on recommendation of the President. By negotiation with the head or chairman of his department and the Dean of the Graduate College, and with the concurrence of the dean of his college, an Associate may be released from his regular duties in order that he may devote himself more fully to research. Application for appointment as Center Associate may be made by any member of the faculty to the Dean of the Graduate College, who, after consultation with the Policy Committee and the appropriate administrative officers, shall make his recommendations to the President. A Center Associate may request extension of his appointment through the summer following an academic year in the Center. Scholars from other locations may be appointed as Associates. Such appointments may be used to bring visitors to assist in established research programs, to bring creative artists to the campus, to bring distinguished scholars to departments in advance of vacancies arising from faculty retirements, and for such other purposes as the Policy Committee may approve. Nominations of off-campus candidates shall be forwarded by department heads and chairmen to the Dean of the Graduate College. Associates may request reappointment but no individual may be granted Associate status for more than three consecutive years. Distinguished Lecturers. Distinguished Lecturers of the Center for Advanced Study will be appointed by the Dean of the Graduate College upon the recommendation of the Director. Chosen from among outstanding scholars, artists, and men of affairs, they will be invited to spend a week or more visiting the University of Illinois. Such visits may be co-sponsored by one or more departments in the University. During his visit, a Distinguished Lecturer will generally give an address to a University-wide audience. H e might also give a specialized seminar or departmental colloquium and serve as a guest lecturer in regularly scheduled University classes. In addition, he will be invited to visit with student and faculty groups. Fellows. Fellows shall be appointed for one-year or two-year terms by the Board of Trustees on recommendation of the President. Fellowships shall be for independent work in all fields of the social and natural sciences, the humanities, and the creative a r t s ; postdoctoral in the case of academic disciplines, they will be awarded in open competition to young men and women of the highest intellectual excellence and creative promise. In addition to their stipends, Fellows shall receive a modest allowance to facilitate their work. Nominations for Center Fellowships may be made to the Director by any faculty member. Selection of candidates shall be made by the Director on the recommendation of an advisory selection committee. A Fellow will in general be affiliated with one or more departments of the University. Teaching duties are optional and may be arranged at the discretion of the Fellow and his department. In general, individuals will not receive a Center Fellowship for more than three consecutive years.
