HEADSHIP OF T H E DEPARTMENT OF DAIRY SCIENCE. URBANA (2) T h e Dean of the College of Agriculture recommends the appointment of Professor Kenneth E. Harshbarger, presently Professor of Nutrition in the Department of Dairy Science and Associate Head of the Department of Dairy Science, as Professor of Nutrition on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department of Dairy Science effective as of September 1, 1969, on a twelve-month service basis, at an annual salary of $24,600. Professor Harshbarger will succeed Professor Glenn W. Salisbury who was appointed Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station effective June 1, 1969. The nomination of Professor Harshbarger was made with the advice of a search committee 1 and is supported by the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Chancellor, and the Dean of the Graduate College at Urbana. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Swain, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY (3) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. Positions in the University are classified in the following categories and are designated in the budget by the symbols indicated: A — indefinite tenure; P — indefinite term appointment for part-time service only; B — two years; D — one year; E — nine months from the beginning of the academic year; G — special tenure; Q — initial term appointment for Professor or Associate Professor; T — terminal appointment, accompanied with or preceded by notice of non-reappointment; W — one-year appointment subject to special written agreement; Y — twelve months' service required instead of two semesters; 1-7 — indicates the number of years of service which will be credited at the end of the contract period toward completion of the probationary period relating to tenure. Figures following a symbol indicate percentage of time if the appointment is on a part-time basis (e.g., D75 means one year on three-fourths time). Chicago Circle 1. JAMES N. ALEXANDER, Administrative Assistant, Office of the Chancellor, and Assistant Professor of Urban Affairs, beginning September 8, 1969 (DY,1Y), at an annual salary of $14,000. 2. H . FREDERICK BROWN, Associate Professor in Jane Addams Graduate School of Social Work, beginning September 1, 1969 ( Q ) , at an annual salary of $18,000. 3. LEONA B. CAIN, Assistant Professor in Jane Addams Graduate School of Social Work, beginning August 7, 1969 (1Y), at an annual salary of $12,500.

4. JAMES THOMAS CAREY, Associate Professor of Sociology, on 60 per cent time,

and of Criminal Justice, on 40 per cent time, beginning September 1, 1969 ( A ) , at an annual salary of $16,000.
