P U R C H A S E O F I N T R A V E N O U S S O L U T I O N S AT T H E RESEARCH A N D E D U C A T I O N A L HOSPITALS (22) T h e Board of T r u s t e e s on M a y 29, 1958, approved a recommendation for the purchase of intravenous fluids and administration kits as required in the Research and Educational Hospitals during the period July 1, 1958, to J u n e 30, J959. from Abbott Laboratories, the lowest bidder, at an estimated cost of $36,323.33 for the year. Bids were taken on a cost-per-unit basis. T h e transaction provides for renewal of the o r d e r for one year by m u t u a l agreement. A development in the use of intravenous fluids has resulted in a larger use of smaller bottles of fluid of a capacity of 100 and 250 c.c. r a t h e r than 500 and 1,000 c.c, and this has had wide acceptance. Because of this development and the increased use of intravenous solutions d u r i n g the first six months of 1958-59, the cost for the year is now estimated at $52,000. Accordingly, the Medical Director of the Hospitals, the Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges, and the Vice-President and Comptroller recommend a u t h o m a tion of an increase in the present o r d e r from $36,323.33 to $52,000. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, this recommendation was approved.
