INSTITUTION F O R T U B E R C U L O S I S R E S E A R C H BIENNIAL OPERATING BUDGET FOR 1 9 5 9 - 6 1 (2) T h e Institution for Tuberculosis Research was created by the General Assembly for the "production, distribution, and application of the bacillus Calmett-Guerin ( B C G ) , and other methods and materials for the prevention of tuberculosis and for conducting research in tuberculosis." T h e responsibility for the professional operation and all other management and control of the Institution is vested in the University. The Director of the Institution and the Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges recommend a budget for 1959-61 amounting to $71,150 for each year, or $142,300 for the biennium. This is an increase of $22,020 for the biennium over the present appropriation. T h e increase is requested for the following purposes: Salary adjustments in accordance with the policy adopted by the University $ 5 020 Increases in expense and equipment 4 000 T o improve the educational program (staff for studying method of preserving BCG vaccine at room temperatures) 13 000 Total $22 020 I recommend that this budget be approved for filing with the Department of Finance and presentation to the Illinois Budgetary Commission.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, this budget was approved by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Bissell, Mr. Herrick, Mrs. Holt, Mr. Hughes, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Livingston, Mr. Nickell, Mrs. Watkins, Mr. Williamson; no, none; absent, Mr. Stratton, Mr. Swain.

A P P O I N T M E N T O F HEAD O F D E P A R T M E N T O F PHYSIOLOGY IN T H E C O L L E G E O F MEDICINE (3) T h e Dean of the College of Medicine and the Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges recommend the appointment of Dr. Arnold V. Wolf as Professor of Physiology on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department of Physiology in the College of Medicine beginning December I, 1958, at an annual salary of $16,600 on "Y" basis. This appointment is to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Dr. G. E. Wakerlin on April 1, 1958, to become Medical Director of the American H e a r t Association. In the meantime, Dr. W . V. Whitehorn has been serving as Acting Head. T h e nomination of Dr. Wolf has been made after careful study by a search committee of the qualifications of candidates for the headship and consultation with members of the department of professorial rank.
