tions for the deanship of the Division. In the meantime, Dr. Stanley C. Robinson, Professor of Business Administration and Associate Dean of the Division, has been serving as its chief administrative officer. The search committee has unanimously nominated Dr. Robinson for the deanship. T h e nomination is also endorsed by the Executive Committee of the Division and is concurred in by the Vice-President and Provost and the Dean of the Graduate College. Accordingly, I recommend the appointment of Stanley C. Robinson as Professor of Business Administration on indefinite tenure and Dean of the Division of University Extension beginning July 1, 1060, and continuing through August 31, 1061, at an annual salary of $15,000 on "Y" basis. EXTENDED LEAVES F O R DISABILITY (6) Prior to July 1, 1959, the University Retirement System provided that an employee was eligible for disability benefits immediately upon employment if the disability did not arise from a condition which existed on the day of employment, and after five years of service regardless of the cause of disability. An amendment of the Act creating the System, approved by the General Assembly effective July 1, 1959, provides that an employee is eligible for disability benefits immediately upon participation in the Retirement System if disability results from an accident, and after two years of service if disability results from illness. This was an improvement in the System as a whole, but did result in a loss to certain employees employed prior to July I, 1959, who have suffered disabilities prior to serving the minimum of two years now required. If the law had not been changed, these employees would have been entitled to disability benefits. The Board of Trustees of the Retirement System has explored this fully to determine if it might pay these claims, but finds it can not legally do so. Therefore it is recommended that, during the transition period, the University extend its disability benefits by granting extended sick leave at half pay to the employee involved for the length of time the employee would have been entitled to such benefits if the Retirement System had not been amended. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, this recommendation was approved.

R E N E W A L O F L E A S E S AT NAVY PIER F O R C H I C A G O U N D E R G R A D U A T E DIVISION (7) T h e current leases with the city of Chicago for quarters at Navy Pier and trie adjacent Drill Hall for the University of Illinois Chicago Undergraduate Division expired June 30, 1959. Negotiations with city of Chicago officials for renewal of these leases through the biennium of 1961-63 were initiated in the spring of 1959, and as a result of the discussions it was agreed that the University would prepare renewal documents with no changes in the provisions of the original leases executed in 1046, and renewed in 1954, except for ( a ) certain changes in the parking area which were agreed to in discussions, and (b) renewal providing for occupancy by the University for the biennium ending June 30, 1061, with the privilege on the part of the University to renew each of the leases for two successive periods of one year each, which would carry through to the period ending June 30, 1963. The documents were delivered to city officials in June, 1959, for examination. There had been an indication that there might be further questions which city officials would want to discuss; and there was a delay due to the illness of the P o r t Director. T h e city returned the documents on May 19, i960, stating that they were satisfactory and requesting that they be executed as quickly as possible so that the Port Director might place them before the meeting of the City Council early in June. Since it was desirable to have the renewal of the leases in effect as soon as possible, the Vice-President and Comptroller executed the documents as requested by city officials. I recommend that the Board of Trustees confirm the action thus taken and ratify the execution of the leases.

On motion of Mr. Clement, the actions taken were ratified by the
