The budget has been examined and approved by the Vice-President and P r o vost and the Vice-President and Comptroller. I recommend that this budget be approved and that the President of the University be authorized to make such changes and adjustments, including approval of new appointments and acceptances of resignations, as are necessary and recommended by the Board of Directors of the Athletic Association within the total income realized.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, Chairman of the Committee on Athletic Activities, seconded by Mr. Swain, Chairman of the Finance Committee, this budget was approved. A copy of the budget was filed with the Secretary for record.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY (3) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. WILLIAM K. ARCHER, Research Assistant Professor in the Institute of Communications Research, for five months from May I, i960, at a salary of $4,166 ( G ) . 2. SAMUEL T. JONES, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, in the College of Medicine, beginning May I, i960, at an annual salary of $12,800 ( D Y ) . 3. EUGENE KOHLBECKER, Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics, for two months from June 16, i960, at a salary of $1,733 ( G ) ; and Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics, beginning September I, i960, at an annual salary of $7,800 ( D ) . 4. PIERSON J. V A N ALTEN, Assistant Professor of Anatomy, in the College of Medicine, beginning September 1, i960, at an annual salary of $8,000 ( D Y ) . Appointment to Nonacademic Staff The Director of Nonacademic Personnel reports the following appointment to a supervisory position of upper level responsibility. 1. JAMES E. RUSSELL, Routing Supervisor, Physical Plant Department, beginning May 1, i960, at an annual salary of $6,000. O n m o t i o n of M r . J o h n s t o n , t h e s e a p p o i n t m e n t s w e r e c o n f i r m e d . APPOINTMENT OF THE DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES (4) Following the appointment of Dean Lyle H . Lanier of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as Vice-President and Provost of the University effective July i> i960, a special search committee 1 was appointed to make nominations for the deanship of the College. The Committee has unanimously nominated Professor Jack W . Peltason of the Department of Political Science. The nomination is also endorsed by the Executive Committee of the College and is concurred in by the Vice-President and Provost and the Dean of the Graduate College. , Accordingly, I recommend the appointment of Jack W. Peltason as Professor of Political Science on indefinite tenure and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, beginning September I, i960, and continuing through August 31, '961, at a salary of $16,000 on "Y" basis.

On motion of Mr. Pogue, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENT OF DEAN OF DIVISION OF UNIVERSITY EXTENSION (5) Following the death of Dean Robert B. Huegy, Professor and Head of the Department of Marketing; R. T. Odell, Professor of Soil Physics: R. W. Kogers, Professor and Head of the Department of English; C. W. Sanford, Dean of Admissions and Records; G. W. White, Professor and Head of the Department of Geology.
